High walls surround Bright Haven, the bricks pressed into thick layers of mortar. Light and dark shades of gray and pink form layers smooth and rocky under heavy top stones. Tucked into the sides of those walls are wooden doors, hinting at secrets beyond which might be found if the iron ring driven through the boards was pulled - but they remain closed over their mysteries. Bright slate roofs perch on top of each tower and decorate the waddle and daub houses within those protected edges - cyan, purple, red, and yellow large scale reflections of the flowers growing beneath them. Below, golden glass casts everything in a sunny hue, each pane warped slightly with hints of lemon brightness at their heart. The packed-dirt lane is wide and clean, dampened regularly by the soft rains which keep trailing ivy and plush grasses green, while the cobblestone sidewalks are swept clean every morning by those selfsame rains.
Long strings hang over the streets, rows of pinwheels spin lazily in the gentle breezes which flow smoothly through the large apertures in the walls, driven toward the bay by equally tall buildings. A small black cat grooms herself on a stack of boxes, peering now and then at the birds which flock in tall trees nearby. Bubbles of leaves reproduce themselves in large bushes offering hiding places for squirrels and ground hogs as well as concealing bits of wall and joins of corners with brilliant green and gold growth. Heavy wooden and plaster balconies are mixed in with softer cloth shades, adding coolness to the buildings even on the hottest afternoons when the sun feeds all life. Overhead, the clock strikes noon over the brightly colored carts and crowds of shoppers and workers alike, gathering in whorls and swirls to eat and chatter, the wind off of the chill water nearby keeping those cool breezes flowing through town.
Like a river made up on voices and souls, the crowds move up and around the main staircase, breaking around both fountains of flowers and the lamps which rise above them. To either side of the bay, flood-walls hold the town far above the wide plaza where ships come and go, and goods pass over sturdy wooden docks. The crash and clamor of everyday trade echoes from edge to edge, dancing over the waters to carry far out to sea. Stones swallow what liquid reflects, absorbing the ordinary joys and pains of the town and remaining resolute and unchanged. That foundation has held for a thousand years, and shall stand for a thousand more - growing stronger with each layer of lives lived upon and within it.
