A note - normally I change the name of the person who approaches me - often insultingly, but out of respect for their privacy. In this case I did not, largely because when I said no to him he went from annoying to outright hostile, and so I want to warn other people who might run into him about his nature when other people aren't obedient to his whims. I'm not a fan of men who become hostile when hearing no from a woman, and I think they should be exposed for who they are.
In any case, it started out innocuously enough, a vaguely well dressed, over a year old avatar with an entirely blank profile IMed me while I was out taking pictures; he was walking away at the time so the initial part was in IMs.
LucasFlannery: hi
Deoridhe Quandry: Hello.
LucasFlannery: now are you
Deoridhe Quandry: I'm doing well; how are you?
LucasFlannery: feel only here in sl
Deoridhe Quandry: I don't understand?
I still have no idea what his third sentence means and he never clarified it. Also, a friendship notice and a teleport notice popped up and I cancelled both of them. After being teleported into a threesome and told "get on" (literally, the only thing he said to me) I've refused to accept teleports from people I don't know. I also dislike random friendship adds and never accept them.
Deoridhe Quandry: Why are you offering me friendship and trying to teleport me?
LucasFlannery: like too dance here
Deoridhe Quandry: Ok, I'm happy for you.
Note - this wasn't a question, it was a statement. I'm not a huge Second Life dancer; for a while I went to the same club every Friday night and hung out with friends, but this guy showed no signs of actually being fun to spend time with. I also never know how to respond to these sorts of power plays besides digging in my heels - he was making statements and expecting me to do the work of turning them into questions and turning him into someone worth my time, and that just isn't how I roll.
LucasFlannery: yes
LucasFlannery: come
LucasFlannery: pls
Someone who can't write out "please" is really putting effort into not putting any effort into it. He tried to teleport me again. I cancelled it.
Deoridhe Quandry: Why should I?
LucasFlannery: no fun
Deoridhe Quandry: You've given me no reason to want to spend time with you, much less follow your orders.

How NOT to Join a Roleplay in Second Life
Late night on my favorite roleplaying sim and we have a few different scenes going on in various places across the realm. A couple - who we will call False King and Silent Queen - came in to wander around. Really, no harm no foul - non-roleplayers are welcome, there isn't really a dress code if you're out of character and even in character it's pretty broad. Their behavior was a little odd; they kept walking around us as we were in the frozen-position norm of paragraph roleplay. Several attempts were made to engage with them in good faith in both local and IM.
[Moderator]: ((Hey! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to IM me. :) ))
[Admin]: ((Heyya guys, feel free to browse the sim, but please don't interrupt the RP!))

How NOT to make "Friends" in Second Life
It started innocuously enough. It's been a long while since someone hit on me, and this wasn't even "me" but rather one of my alts - specifically my neko alt. I'm largely uninterested in being hit on, but up for some conversation if it turns out to be good. Overall, this alt looks like a hot mess and is dressed up in a variety of free items from all over the place - one by one I'm outfitting my alts but it's the sort of thing which happens slowly.
[Pickup Liar]: pretty outfit
Hyper Coy: Thank you.
[Pickup Liar]: your welcome
[Pickup Liar]: smiles
[Pickup Liar]: are them boots or hightheels you have on
I was in a non-viual viewer, so I actually had to check in my inventory for what I was wearing - in this case a rather nice pair of free boots from LeeZu.
Hyper Coy: Boots.
[Pickup Liar]: may i see a close up of them
Hyper Coy: Ah... sure?
This is a weird thing to ask - it's really easy to look at something without asking in Second Life. This was a clear indication this person was not your standard random-hitter and an example of an escalation a la Pickup Artists. The purpose is to push against someone's boundaries and test them while being indirect enough that you can deny what is going on if directly responded to.

How NOT to Make Friends and Influence People in Second Life
Recently, I had reason to head to a Sandbox on an alt of mine, the lovely medieval Nineveh (named for the ancient city, of course, though I'm a few millennia off in how I dress her). Usually I don't interact much with the fellow people - walk in, unpack boxes, walk out. This time I was lingering a bit longer, mostly because I was distracted and depressed, when a few things happened to divert me further. Warnings for language below the cut, and a rather rude conversation as well.

How NOT to Pick Up a Chick in Second Life - Episode 15
So Blue Blood has new custom fishing - and believe me I'll be showing off the first outfit once I get it - so I was setting up my main Lolita alt to fish so she could have some awesome clothes. I end up on the Seven Seas sim where I can rez things and make an Oceanography Database - a must for every fisherwoman - and I'm merrily doing my thing when I'm approached by a 1 day old account in a basic mesh outfit - the short haired guy in the gray shirt. We have the following interaction in local chat - which exemplifies my complaint about these kinds of cold approaches.
I think it's fantastic to approach and talk to people. I think it's much less good to approach someone, bark orders at them, largely ignore answers, and say empty things you think they will like in the hopes they will friend/obey you. That isn't a conversation. I don't know what it is, but it isn't a conversation.
[Alt-Boy]: hi wren
Wren Lyric: Hello.
[Alt-Boy]: how are you
Wren Lyric: I'm doing pretty well. How are you?
[Alt-Boy]: good let fly some were
Wren Lyric: Why?
[Alt-Boy]: it boring
Wren Lyric: I'm not bored. I'm setting up my Oceanography Database for fishing.
[Alt-Boy]: ok you look good
Wren Lyric: Uh, thanks. You look like a default mesh avatar.
[Alt-Boy]: you to
Wren is currently dressed in a prim-heavy Cipher Lolita dress, pre-mesh, with bright curly hair I changed during this conversation to a much nicer Analog Dog hair; she is all right, but she is not particularly impressive as avatars go. Also, once again, a stranger to me ignores anything I say in favor of focusing on my appearance - something which on this alt, at least, I don't much care about yet - talk to me when I've put more time and effort into her!
Wren Lyric: No, I'm not at all mesh.
Wren Lyric: So, you're new to Second Life?
[Alt-Boy]: no
Wren Lyric: You're a day old wearing a default mesh avatar. How long have you been around?
[Alt-Boy]: shark
Wren Lyric: Jellyfish.
He types for a while. Stops. Nothing shows up in local chat.
Wren Lyric: You have to hit enter after you type in order for me to see it.
[Alt-Boy]: go to the beach
He walks away, out of chat range. He walks back.
Wren Lyric: Is that a question, a request, or an order?
[Alt-Boy]: questions
He walks out of chat range again. Back in.
Wren Lyric: Then, no, I don't wish to go to the beach.
[Alt-Boy]: ok
[Alt-Boy]: i like you how old are you
Wren Lyric: What do you like about me?
[Alt-Boy]: you are pretty and smart
Wren Lyric: I sound really generic and boring. Pretty in Second Life is easy, and I have no idea why you'd think I was smart unless you think not obeying you is smart - in which case I agree.
[Alt-Boy]: ok
He sends a friend request.
Wren Lyric: Why on earth would you want to be friends with me? I've been borderline rude this entire time we've interacted.
[Alt-Boy]: i do not care i am a nice guy
Wren Lyric: No, you really don't seem to be nice to me. Or kind.
Wren Lyric: Demanding. Uninterested in me or the world around you. Not nice, though.
He walks into me twice, pushing me, without saying anything.
Wren Lyric: That wasn't a nice thing to do.
[Alt-Boy]: ok
Wren Lyric snickers.
[Alt-Boy]: what
Wren Lyric: Worst. Apology. Ever. Definitely not a nice man.
[Alt-Boy]: i am sorry for what i did
Wren Lyric: I accept your apology.
Wren Lyric: So, how long have you been in Second Life?
[Alt-Boy]: 5 year
Wren Lyric: Wow, so this is an alt?
He types again for a while, then stops. Nothing shows up in local chat.
Wren Lyric: You have to hit enter after you type so I can see it.
[Alt-Boy]: how long have you been in second life
He flies away. I don't see he has left chat range until after I hit enter, so the following went into local chat to no one.
Wren Lyric: My main is about six or seven now, I think. I have an older alt, but I wasn't on her much. She's a couple years older.
He flew around in the air for a while, coming into chat range once but not saying anything, and then vanished - where to, I have no idea. I wrote this post while he was walking around, curious to see if he would ever want an answer to the question he asked.
I remain curious about what people who approach me like this are really hoping to get out of interacting with others. By and large, I don't approach people - once and a while I will if I like their outfit or recognize their name from somewhere, and I try to be passingly friendly to people who approach me - but how they approach me seriously gets my hackles up. The "I'm nice" claim similarly does - especially when contrasted with his actual behavior (likewise, my being pretty and smart were equally not in evidence). It just seems weirdly predatory and uninterested at the same time, and I really don't like it.
Lets contrast this with something that came in on the tail end of my time on the sim, before I headed back to Blue Blood to fish for awesome clothes; older avatar, highly unclothed and muscly, owns land on an adult sim - so the eventual goal seemed semi-obvious - but the approach was much more fun.
[Friendly Approach Dude]: hello. You know you are fishing in the sand? Trying to catch sand sharks?
Wren Lyric: They are all the rage these days. Very chic chic.
[Friendly Approach Dude]: lol....cool...hope you catch a big one
Wren Lyric: Me, too. I figured I'd open a zoo and keep it as a pet.
Wren Lyric: Could make millions!
[Friendly Approach Dude]: lol....good idea....I'll be your manager and take only 10%
[Friendly Approach Dude]: I see a shark out there...I'll swim out and see if I can catch him.
Wren Lyric: Have fun!
Wren Lyric: I'm heading back to my fishing hole, now that I'm set up.
[Friendly Approach Dude]: k...nice mtg you
Wren Lyric: Nice meeting you, too!
Now, I've no idea why the conversation needed to end because I left the sim - but that seems to be how the male half of these things work. Anyone know from the other end? It seems like it might be the illusion of availability; if I'm physically closeish to you in a sim and have no obvious exterior interests of my own does it seem more like I might eventually follow him to an adult sim? But if I have elsewhere to go, I'm less likely to? It could be a pattern recognition of women seeking sex, too, though I'd assume most of them go to adult sims. n any case, he was a pleasant few moments to re-assert my faith in humanity! Witty and entertaining, all in one.

How NOT to Pick Up a Chick* in Second Life
*Chick who is actually a dude, but [Mr. Observant] never noticed.
One of the hazards of hosting "How NOT to" is occasionally logging in to unbelievable stories of friends of mine that are perfectly suited to the theme. In this case, it was a story by a dear friend who logged on to deal with a customer matter and had one of the group chats he was in open up. Like many group chats, it brought the drama - in this case a bunch of people very upset with [Mr. Observant] for contacting someone in a manner that was inappropriate. My friend wasn't sure of the details, but he was entertained, so he emoted into group chat pulling out his popcorn and eating it. A moment later, [Mr. Observant] is in his IMs. All typos are original - and I didn't correct grammar either! [Mr. Observant] may have English as his first language, but he hasn't mastered it.
[Mr. Observant]: ty for the popcorn
[Mr. Observant]: smiles
[Ms. Dude]: This is hella entertaining. Sorry that you're the butt of it though.
[Mr. Observant]: it ok
[Mr. Observant]: am offten hahaha
[Mr. Observant]: i have an opionion so attack me
[Mr. Observant]: i guess
[Mr. Observant]: i am very wise been in sl for 7 years now
[Ms. Dude]: I hopped on and they were already attacking, so.. I've got no opinion on it
[Mr. Observant]: it is ok
[Mr. Observant]: good hahaha
[Mr. Observant]: i am a loving caring man you up to date
[Mr. Observant]: why do people feel that have to attack anothers ideas
[Ms. Dude]: I don't know. I take it English isn't your first language?
[Mr. Observant]: oh it is, i am a bad typer
[Mr. Observant]: sorry
[Mr. Observant]: i bought a home in a rl nudist resort in southern california
[Mr. Observant]: warm
[Ms. Dude]: Then it's just some of what you say is easily misconstrued.
[Mr. Observant]: i know
[Mr. Observant]: what else
[Mr. Observant]: typing
[Mr. Observant]: then voice abit clearer
[Mr. Observant]: but pass a story around a circle of people it witll never come back the same
[Mr. Observant]: you live in the us too
[Mr. Observant]: ?
[Ms. Dude]: Yeah I do. Though I only popped on quick to check a message from a customer, so I'm gonna run now.
[Mr. Observant]: (Saved)you have business love
[Mr. Observant]: (Saved)bye love, hope you call me again
[Mr. Observant]: (Saved)voice someday too
It's kind of impressive to IM someone without ever even looking at their profile, but the [Mr. Observant]s of the world are up to the task! And no worries about any critique - he has an opinion, so attack him!

How NOT to Get Your Links on my Blog
I am always amazed at what people will put on other people's blogs.
On my fashion-centric posts, I'll occasionally land a comment, and I like to catch them early and send in a thank you since they're almost always from creators, but this time apparently someone felt the need to let me know he's boycotting me, and get in a few links to his blog - and his AOL profile - at the same time.
I'm not a huge fan of being peoples' link farms, and so I delete with prejudice (mark as spam) but I thought you good people of my blog who love the drama would like to know the quality of men I drive to comment.
I am an American man, and I have decided to boycott American women. In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, don’t know how to cook or clean, don’t want to have children, etc. Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women?
Here's the hysterical part of this comment - he clearly believes he is an intelligent man, however his commenting on my blog implies strongly otherwise. He is capable of using grammar, which is a relief, but he is seemingly incapable of assessing actual events in the world most of us share, which is depressing (for him). The decision to not form a relationship with a person who mistreats one is rational, however generalizing to at least 158.6 million people indicates neither a sense of proportion, nor scientific or logical cognitive ability. Combine this with complaining to an identified feminist on her home turf, and I'm afraid the balance is tipping toward him not meeting the "must be at least this smart to converse" standard.
American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible, and highly unchaste. The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least.
Let's start applying this to me, and then generalize - just for fun! I am definitely immature; a decent fart joke can usually get me going, and some of my favorite jokes are of the "How do you know an elephant is in your refrigerator*" variety - so mea culpa. Not willing to take the selfish, though; that's just foolish-talk. I have my arrogant moments, right now for instance, but in general arrogance would get in the way of me doing my job or liking myself, so I tend to avoid it unless the targets come to me and ask for feedback ever so nicely, as this gentleman did.
Self-centered is one of those terms that is functionally meaningless, as by definition most of us know our own narrow perspective and perhaps the perspectives others let us share now and then. Comparing levels of self-centeredness often says as much about the assessor as the subject. In terms of mentally unstable, I'd argue I'm actually the opposite - able to weather the instability of others with a certain amount of grace and flow with my own typical moodiness with understanding, of not poise.
I'm hella irresponsible, though. Hand me a pile of paperwork that needs to be done, one or two pages will get done and the rest will be a nest for me and my cat. Me and paperwork does not get along. I'm also a whole lot more chaste than I'd prefer! It's been years, and semi-frequently bits of me try to jump in the unchasteness wagon without success. I really need to get back to working on that again... life has been busy, though!
As for generalizing... he's talking about 158.6 million people, all of them humans; generalization is highly irresponsible and, dare I say it, disgusting~!
This blog is my attempt to explain why I feel American women are inferior to foreign women (non-American women), and why American men should boycott American women, and date/marry only foreign (non-American) women.
BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN!
He appears in the final paragraph to get lost - or perhaps phrase his invitation to his den of wisdom poorly, so I'm afraid I have to remove 0.25 points of grammar based on general unintelligibility. Remember, ladies and gentlemen, communicating clearly is the hallmark of good grammar!
I also feel the need to point out that boycotting half of the human population is troubling on the face of it - both for the equating of that many people with a product or service (which might be boycotted in the traditional sense of the word) and because he commented on my blog, and thus is not boycotting US women at all! I really hope he practices his boycotting so that he can boycott me more successfully. Good luck American man! I hope you succeed in your dreams.
Just as a side note, though, you should avoid hospitals, sports, computers, schools, science, religion, food, the arts, places of business, and this blog as all of them involve with or are supported by women. Good luck!
*Footprints in the butter.

How NOT to pick up a chick in Second Life - Episode 13
It's been a while since my last random pick-up, and this one... just was weird. And boring. And illustrative of the weird lack of engagement I experience on these random pick-ups; I have to admit I began to wonder if I was dealing with a chatbot, but he never asked for a single Linden.
[17:07] [Four Month Old]: hiiiii
[17:07] Deoridhe Quandry: Hello. ^.^
[17:08] [Four Month Old]: why happy ?? ^_^
[17:08] Deoridhe Quandry: Uh, why not?
[17:08] [Four Month Old]: ok :)
[17:09] [Four Month Old]: where you from??
[17:09] Deoridhe Quandry: Second Life. Mostly I live on a sim called Imagine.
[17:10] [Four Month Old]: me too
[17:10] [Four Month Old]: 6_^
[17:10] Deoridhe Quandry: You have been to Imagine?
[17:11] [Four Month Old]: kteer
[17:11] [Four Month Old]: or u
[17:11] [Four Month Old]: ??
[17:11] [Four Month Old]: much
[17:12] Deoridhe Quandry: I have no idea what "kteer" "or u" or "??" means.
[17:12] Deoridhe Quandry: I have no idea what you're asking.
[17:14] [Four Month Old]: "ktee"r this arabic
[17:14] Deoridhe Quandry: I don't speak Arabic.
[17:14] [Four Month Old]: oi know
[17:15] [Four Month Old]: old are you
[17:15] [Four Month Old]: ??
[17:15] Deoridhe Quandry: My six year anniversary just passed.
[17:16] Deoridhe Quandry: And you're about four months old.
[17:17] [Four Month Old]: now ???
[17:17] Deoridhe Quandry: Yes. If you look in your profile, it will tell you how long since you rezzed.
[17:19] [Four Month Old]: -_-
I've tried a variety of ways of parrying the endless requests strangers have regarding my offline life. These days I tend toward answering with Second Life information only, though I've been more direct in the past. In this case, his very lack of elaboration seemed to make brief responses make more sense. I'm fairly certain English was his second language, but I'm also fairly certain he was making little to no attempt to be intelligible. Why he chose such... I have no idea. It seems counter-intuitive to contact someone and then make the contact almost completely obscure.
[17:20] Deoridhe Quandry: ??
[17:21] [Four Month Old]: no thing
[17:22] Deoridhe Quandry: Man, you "hit on random female avatars" people are boring.
[17:24] [Four Month Old]: i agree with you
[17:24] Deoridhe Quandry: Yeah, you lot always do.
[17:24] [Four Month Old]: yeah
[17:27] [Four Month Old]: what color is you hir??
[17:27] [Four Month Old]: hair
[17:27] Deoridhe Quandry: Couldn't you see while I was next to you?
[17:27] Deoridhe Quandry: Before you teleported out?
[17:31] Deoridhe Quandry: Or do you only care about offline things?
[17:34] [Four Month Old]: yeah
And it followed a familiar theme; agree with everything I say and add nothing of interest. I know they can't be operating from a literal playbook, but the pattern is so stable and predictable that it implies there must be something deeper driving this. If it really does cross language barriers, what does that mean about the socialization of men who solicit limited and offline-focused access to women and care nothing else about us?

How NOT to pick up a chick in Second Life - Episode 13
Well, at least he's honest.
[Imadik]: ru from?
Deoridhe Quandry: Excuse me?
[Imadik]: hello
Deoridhe Quandry: Good afternoon.
[Imadik]: good night in my country
Deoridhe Quandry: Good afternoon on Second Life.
[Imadik]: where are you from?
[Imadik]: ok
Deoridhe Quandry: Second Life.
Deoridhe Quandry: What do you like to do in World?
[Imadik]: i like sex
[Imadik]: you?
Deoridhe Quandry: Photography, blogging, intelligent conversations.
And that was the end of that - having established that I have interests that don't include sex with strangers, he would have nothing more to do with me.

How NOT to be a Peer in Second Life
So, several times now I've gotten a random, unsolicited invitation to a group called Suicide Dreams from an avatar named Adam01DaxterALT who has hidden himself from search to be more difficult to find. Based on it's description it's a support group for a narrow spectrum of people - something really for a narrow line of avatars, not random invites, and not something I was interested in becoming involved with.
"Suicide Dreams is a peer to peer advocacy daily support group for people who deal with suicidal thoughts. We hold daily meetings at 4pm SLT.
suicide, mental illness, health, bipolar, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, ocd, add, adhd, did, borderline, ptsd, autism, aspergers, depression, anxiety, panic, agoraphobia, disabled, self harm, transgender, abuse, trauma, stress"
Not the kind of thing you'd think random strangers should be invited to - right?
I had ignored it the first (few?) times, but this time I decided I was really tired of getting the invite and was hoping to stop it. After a sincere amount of work to contact Mr. DaxterALT, I sent him an IM.
[18:46] Deoridhe Quandry: This is the Second Time you have invited me to your Suicide Dreams group unsolicited. Please do not invite me again.
[18:47] Adam01 Daxter (Adam01DaxterALT): fku
[18:47] Deoridhe Quandry: Wow, rude.
Now, like most people, I assumed that the group leader or a Peer Advocacy and Support Group would like to know that one of his members was not only inviting people unsolicitedly and randomly, but also know that such a person was rather abruptly rude, so I wrote a notecard.
Dear Mr. Xthislife:
One of the members of your Suicide Dreams group has invited me to join it - unsolicited and without speaking to me first - at least two times. I contacted him to politely ask him to cease doing so, and he responded with "fku". I would expect, given the purpose you say this group has, that you would not like your members to be insulting people so directly, and so I am letting you know what happened.
Sincerely,
Deoridhe Quandry
I got the following response:
[18:58] Xthislife: discardedand muted
[18:58] Xthislife: never read it
And then I was muted and blocked by him.
It's really amazing to me that a Peer Advocacy Group that advertises itself as a resource for people with a whole panoply of mental illnesses would be so incredibly, immediately, and unrepentantly rude to polite requests and responses. I really hope they aren't equally as rude to their members.

How NOT to Make a Friend in Second Life
I got hit on again. Of course, I seemed to intimidate him before he got beyond "huging", but I don't have any more doubts about where he wanted to go, than I have doubts about the naked man who TPed in halfway through this conversation with the name, "Girls I Want To Fuck You".
[21:15:00] [Clueless in USA]: hi there
[21:15:18] [Clueless in USA]: i like your dance
[21:16:50] Deoridhe Quandry: Thank you.
[21:17:14] Deoridhe Quandry: You can get your own AO for not much on the marketplace, I think.
[21:18:00] [Clueless in USA]: im new in here and im try to see how it work
[21:18:21] Deoridhe Quandry: An AO is an animation overrider. It makes it so that you move, stand, and sit differently than the default.
Up until now, ok conversation. Dull, but he was new and didn't know the terms. He was standing uncomfortably close to me in avatar, though (hint: if we're touching, you're too close), and the next words out of his fingers cemented exactly why he was in my IMs.
[21:19:24] [Clueless in USA]: how about huging lol
[21:19:49] Deoridhe Quandry: Ah, those are usually scripted objects.
[21:20:57] [Clueless in USA]: hahahahaahh come in close
[21:21:04] Deoridhe Quandry: Why?
[21:21:38] [Clueless in USA]: we can talk
[21:21:48] Deoridhe Quandry: We are talking right now.
[21:24:26] [Clueless in USA]: i love to see you close so i can feel you
[21:24:53] Deoridhe Quandry: Dude, I don't want a stranger "feeling" me. Thanks anyway.
See, this is why I get so annoyed. Less than five minutes in my IMs and he's trying to pick me up. Second Life is not a bar. We were in a hair store, for Fuck's Sake.
[21:25:37] [Clueless in USA]: im [Clueless in USA] and you
[21:26:22] Deoridhe Quandry: I'm Deoridhe. Introductions don't make you less of a stranger, especially given how focused you are on talking about what you want.
[21:27:20] [Clueless in USA]: hahahahahahaaha we are not stanger any more
[21:27:34] Deoridhe Quandry: No, we're still strangers. You're just a stranger being creepy now.
[21:28:47] [Clueless in USA]: im sorry im just playig with you
This is one of the interactions that drive me nuts - ignore everything I say, focus on what gets you what you want, and do what you think you can to get what you want while ignoring what I want completely. This is so disrespectful. I'm making my boundaries clear, and he's tyring to get around them on a technicality, which only makes him more creepy.
[21:29:12] Deoridhe Quandry: Apology accepted.
[21:29:25] [Clueless in USA]: thanks
[21:29:46] [Clueless in USA]: for real im [Clueless in USA] usa and u
[21:30:08] Deoridhe Quandry: I'm Deoridhe. For real.
[21:30:28] [Clueless in USA]: from
See again: ignoring the boundaries of another person because you want to. See also: fucking creepy.
[21:30:37] Deoridhe Quandry: Why does it matter?
[21:31:11] [Clueless in USA]: maybe we can be frind
[21:31:32] Deoridhe Quandry: So far you've shown no interest in me besides wanting to hug me and "feel" me. Why would I want to try to be a friend to you?
[21:32:54] [Clueless in USA]: your right
[21:33:24] Deoridhe Quandry: I asked a question. I didn't make a statement.
He never answered the question, but I continue to wonder it. These guys IM me wanting to be "friends" (read: get cybersex); they never, ever, ever, ever give me a reason why I might want to be friends with them. Ever. Ever ever. This one was no different, and I mocked him for it below, but he still never answered the question.
[21:33:57] [Clueless in USA]: like i say im new so i dont know what all about
[21:35:03] [Clueless in USA]: you dont have to be friend
[21:35:20] Deoridhe Quandry: So you were born this morning and have never formed a relationship with another human? That's gotta be really tough.
See: diverting attention from difficult question. See also: Deoridhe getting even more bored and annoyed and beginning to lose her vague semblance of politeness.
[21:36:52] [Clueless in USA]: hahahahahahansorry
[21:37:27] Deoridhe Quandry: Sorry for what?
[21:37:51] [Clueless in USA]: if i bother
[21:38:18] [Clueless in USA]: but realy i like your danc
[21:39:08] Deoridhe Quandry: Why do all of the guys like you say that? One) You can never answer why my physical location matters. Two) You answer questions with assertions I'm right, as if what I'm interested in is someone too brainless to answer a question. Three) you apologize for being a bother without actually doing anything more interesting. Is it a script you get, or something?
[21:39:42] Deoridhe Quandry: Yeah. You said. It's an AO. You can get one of your own if you want.
This is the second time he complements my AO. Overall, the animations I purchased three or four years ago were what he apparently liked the most about me. Also, watch below as he deflects my entire rant by trying to make it about my feeling an emotion I'm not feeling. See: not respecting my boundaries again. See also: fucking creepy.
[21:42:20] [Clueless in USA]: your words and how you talk says you are nerves thats whay im said sorry
[21:42:42] Deoridhe Quandry: am not "nerves" or nervous. I'm irritated and you are dull.
[21:43:34] Deoridhe Quandry: I've had this conversation multiple times before with other people. It's like you're incapable of seeing me as a person, which is both pathetic and boring.
[21:45:42] [Clueless in USA]: how to start frindship without known any thing like name or where about some one you never see
[21:47:33] Deoridhe Quandry: You know my name - it's Deoridhe. You know where I am, it's Second Life. You see my avatar. I have a bunch of information in my profile. If none of that is good enough for you, then give up on meeting people in SL and go meet people offline, because you've missed the point.
I simply do not get why someone would come online and want offline information. I never got it on ISCABBS. I never got it on Gaia Online. I don't get it on Second Life. As a lead in move it is useless and gives you absolutely no useful information, and in a world with profiles you have so much more to work with. And I taught him how to find a profile, even if he never actually made use of any of the information in it or, indeed, became anything more than dull.
[21:50:43] [Clueless in USA]: ok how i go to your profil can you show me pleas
[21:51:07] Deoridhe Quandry: Right click on me. Click on "profile" when the menu opens.
[21:51:22] Deoridhe Quandry: Clicking on my name in this chat should open up a menu as well which lets you see my profile.
[21:52:17] [Clueless in USA]: thanks
[21:52:51] Deoridhe Quandry: You're welcome.
[21:53:11] Deoridhe Quandry: There are some other helpful tips here: http://primdolls.blogspot.com/p/newbie-resources.html
[21:53:24] Deoridhe Quandry: At the bottom are some Sims you can go to which teach you how to navigate around SL.
[21:56:54] [Clueless in USA]: good thanks ageen
[21:57:02] Deoridhe Quandry: You're welcome.
[22:02:59] [Clueless in USA]: cool good info
[22:03:31] Deoridhe Quandry: Thank you. It might be a little dated; it takes a lot of time to stay on top of it.
[22:04:08] [Clueless in USA]: yyes
[22:04:39] Deoridhe Quandry: ^.^
He was showing some interest in learning, so I was nice.
[22:07:18] [Clueless in USA]: you playing awesome
[22:09:49] Deoridhe Quandry: Huh?
[22:10:38] Deoridhe Quandry: What do you mean?
[22:10:57] [Clueless in USA]: danceing
[22:11:13] [Clueless in USA]: i cant move
[22:11:20] Deoridhe Quandry: I don't control it. It's an animation I purchased from a store.
This would be the third time I gave him this information, though it's possible he didn't understand the other two times and just... was incapable of asking a question for some reason.
[22:12:08] [Clueless in USA]: oh real mony or just point
[22:12:18] Deoridhe Quandry: Like I said, you need an animation overrider. You can get some for free on the Second Life Marketplace. The only in world place that gave one for free closed a year ago, so far as I know.
[22:12:24] Deoridhe Quandry: Real money, not a freebie.
[22:12:32] Deoridhe Quandry: That's how I have the dress and the hair, too.
[22:13:22] [Clueless in USA]: cool styl
[22:13:47] Deoridhe Quandry: I'm a big fan of fashion.
[22:14:31] [Clueless in USA]: i see
At this point I just gave up and stopped responding.
[22:16:51] [Clueless in USA]: ok thanks for chat i m going sleep
[22:17:03] Deoridhe Quandry: Ok, bye.
[22:17:14] [Clueless in USA]: bye
What chat, I ask you? Aside from my pointing him to some newbie resources, which he apparently barely read at all, we talked about a whole lot of nothing with him dodging most of the questions I asked and he tested my boundaries to see if he could push me around. My strong temptation is to just ignore the next one - but I keep hoping one of them will do something different, will show some level of thought and comprehension beyond, "Buh huh touch u rite?"

How to Be a Customer in Second Life
Normally, my slice of life conversations in Second Life are about what not to do - examples of boorishness, boringness, demand and despair, but this time I have something very special for you all - an example of a customer doing things right when making a request - a requested that was not fulfilled, by the way, in case you think this is a normal "Customer is happy getting what she wants" sort of thing. She also got prizes in the end, but I want to remind people to be polite and nice to others even if there aren't prizes in the end (though I'll admit to a similar prizes-are-awesome weakness). In this case, the store owner, my darling friend Charlie, has included some of his own comments which will be set out from the text of the IMs. If I have anything to add, I'll use my usual italics, but he pretty much marks things out the way I would have so good job Charlie.
((OFFLINES))
Vanria Resident: (Saved Thu Feb 06 19:04:31 2014)Hiya
Vanria Resident: (Saved Thu Feb 06 19:04:50 2014)Sorry to bother you. I bought the Digital Deamon full set
Vanria Resident: (Saved Thu Feb 06 19:05:23 2014)I know you probably get asked this alot, But where do I find the hair you have on the pic of it? Do you sell it and I am just missing it in your store?
((ONLINE))
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/30592 It would seem like the store is sadly, no longer around anymore.
Vanria Resident: ahhh now
Vanria Resident: no
Vanria Resident: the hair was so cool
Vanria Resident: well if the store is gone, is the creator still around?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I know! The store was awesome too!
Vanria Resident: awsome? Awww why did ya have to tell me that
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I'm not sure. Their profile is pretty much cleaned out, they have a partner, and only one pick, but it's not in english
Vanria Resident: joy
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I wish I could help more.
Vanria Resident: it is ok
Vanria Resident: thank you though
Vanria Resident: I am fixing to go back to your store to buy the skin packs
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Sorry it took so long to get back to you
Vanria Resident: no it is ok
Vanria Resident: RL should aslways come first
((This is why she gets the best Customer Support EVER! plus free stuff. She understands that shop owners have REAL LIVES!))
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): You have no idea how much I'm grateful you said that! LOL
Vanria Resident: well it is true
Vanria Resident: I can not get mad at you just cause things come up
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Not everyone believes that
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): What color skin were you planning on getting? or was it the full set?
Vanria Resident: might get the full set
Vanria Resident: I am using my nightelf skin now
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): so the darkest ?
Vanria Resident: well my night elf is pink
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): oh!
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I'm not sure I made a pink skin.. *frowns*
Vanria Resident: lol it is ok
Vanria Resident: it is the only skin I have that does not have glowing tats on it
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Female, right?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): (seriously, half the time I am wrong)
Vanria Resident: yes although male Nightelves can be a darker pink
Second Life: Inventory item offered
Vanria Resident: I am at your store now if you want to see it
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Now, it's not a deamon kit... but its the pink skin I made for the Fantasy Faire this year.
Vanria Resident: oh thank you very much
received your inventory offer.
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): erm, last year
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): yeah, it's lighter than that, but you might like the markings on it. *shrugs*
Vanria Resident: let me switch to what I normally wear
Vanria Resident: well minus the tail
Vanria Resident: Nightelf from World of Warcraft
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): very nice. I don't play it, but.. LOL
Vanria Resident: I do not play at all
Vanria Resident: but loved the look
Vanria Resident: ok so where are your skins here?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): the deamons skins come with and without the scales
Vanria Resident: is there a buy all pack?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I also have more skins in another building. I should really reorganize so they are at least somewhat together. lol
Vanria Resident: or a TP map
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): the big vendors are the buy all packs for the individual colors
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): the smaller ones are just the parts, or just the skins
Vanria Resident: huh?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I tried to make it so that if someone just wanted the skins, or the attachments, they could get them separately
Vanria Resident: ok
Vanria Resident: so where is the button to buy all the skins
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): you have to buy them by color. No fatpack of all the colors as one.
Vanria Resident: awww
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): the smaller vendors in the center, Flesh Only is just the skins
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): are you planning on buying all the colors?
Vanria Resident: think I will stick just withthe skins
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): wait!!
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): LOL
Vanria Resident: ok?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Are you in the DLS VIP group?
Vanria Resident: no
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): ok hang on a second.
Vanria Resident: I found your digital deamon on the marketplace
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): make sure you have room for a group. I'm going to remove the cost to join, cause you're planning on buying a lot. Wearing the tag in my store will give you a 10% discount on everything.
Vanria Resident: yeah
Vanria Resident: how much does it cost to join?
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): 150 usually, but I removed that for you.
Vanria Resident: stick it back on
Vanria Resident: I do not mind supporting
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): You sure?
Vanria Resident: yep
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Okay! LOL It's back on
This is where I think she deserves a note of commendation - it seems like a little thing, but the sense that creators deserve the prices they are asking for different things is a major thing for me. Now, I'm not a huge fan of group fees, mostly because one tends to get locked into a group which might go from very generous to entirely inert without warning, but Vanria's dedication to giving that little extra is commendable and sweet.
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Some vendors will give two pay buttons. If you have the tag on, the lower price is the one you should choose.
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): is it awkward that I am still standing here? LOL It feels awkward, like I'm hovering at your shoulder whispering "Buy allll the thinnnnggssss"
Vanria Resident: I am working on it
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I'm really not saying that though! LOL
Vanria Resident: riiighhhht
Vanria Resident: your thinking it
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Well... yeah but I'm not SAYING it!
Vanria Resident: ok I got them
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): awesome!
Vanria Resident: now I have to find cool funky hair
Vanria Resident: youmight want to put in your market place ad that the hair no longer exsist
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Yeah, I should do that.
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): If you're looking for cyber ish style hair, the only place I can think of is Ash Soyinka's Blue Galaxy... or uhmm... the place that has this hair
Vanria Resident: hmm ok
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): I knew I kept this funky ass demo for a reason lol
Second Life: Inventory item offered
received your inventory offer.
Vanria Resident: thanks
Vanria Resident: will go unpack the skins and play with them before I go there
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): uhm... I don't have a LM to blue galaxy i think
Vanria Resident: thank you very much
Vanria Resident: eh that is what the search button is for
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Ash (ash.soyinka)
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): that is the creator of it. She doesn't have much in the way of hair, but maybe something you'd like nonetheless
Vanria Resident: Blue Galaxy shows up
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): awesome
Vanria Resident: I will check her out
Vanria Resident: thank you again
Vanria Resident: above and beyond
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Not a problem! :D
Vanria Resident: BAMF
Charlie (lerochelle.destiny): Have a nice day! and weekend too!
Vanria Resident: you to
An there goes the sweet customer in her natural habitat. Fight on, Night Elf; fight on.
A couple few notes on my look, which I adore. The dress is a new release from Sublime Shroud Kreations, and is his first foray into mesh. He's not at rigging his own clothes quite yet, but don't worry - I'm tapping a foot impatiently at him <3 This was his playing with transparency, and he made a rainbow overdress which simply took my breath away, and the simple sheath dress underneath can be worn independently. My awesome hat is from Coco and was one of her entire huge room of free stuff. I've already outfitted a bunch of my alts - I recommend you grab all your friends and check it out because her offerings are awesome. Finally, the shoes are from Deviance, the awesome creator of my ever-present wings, and despite the marked lack of rainbow (*ahem*) they are awesome. All of the base colors are commons, which is fantastic as I love them all, and her rares are a couple of Alice in Wonderland themed slippers, and two glass slippers which appear to be the runaway hit of the Fantasy Gatcha Carnival. I have two Alice Shoes - you have two glass slippers - you want to trade with me. You are getting sleepy... sleepy... you want to give me your glass slippers... sleepy... and anything rainbow you own... sleepy... *snore*

You are getting sleepy... sleepy... you want to give me your glass slippers... sleepy... and anything rainbow you own... sleepy... *snore*

How NOT to pick up a chick in Second Life - Episode 12
It's been a while since I've been hit on - and this particular example is especially astonishing because of the rapid turnaround in attitude after a single "no." This is actually fairly common in these kinds of interactions, along with the astonishing lack of interest in anything about me beyond my appearance - despite the fact that lots of information about me is literally in my profile, a single click away.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: hello fairy girl
Deoridhe Quandry: Hello.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: blow kiss onto your forehead
This sort of immediate and inappropriate virtual physical contact is actually a technique used by Pick-up Artists who by and large disdain women. It's called Kino Escalation, and the idea is to build in a sense of familiarity and comfort in women by touching us almost immediately. Personally, it makes me deeply uncomfortable. While I am an inveterate hugger and cuddler, I expect people I just met to be quite a bit more hands off because I don't yet know what they want, and I am suspicious by nature at this point.
Deoridhe Quandry blinks.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: cute!!
Deoridhe Quandry: Thank you.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: very welcome, sweet
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: ok, sorry to bothered you, bye
Deoridhe Quandry: No bother at all.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: realy?
Deoridhe Quandry: Yes, I'm not inclined to lie in general.
[Private Chat] Deoridhe Quandry: I'm being hit on... badly.
[Private Chat] Ro: lol Deo
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: is a good thing
Deoridhe Quandry: I believe so, yes.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: i like it~
Deoridhe Quandry: You like... what?
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: you're not inclined to lie
Deoridhe Quandry: Ah, yes. Most people prefer truthful people.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: giggles, sure
[Private Chat] Deoridhe Quandry: Seriously. He keeps giggling at me.
[Private Chat] Charlie: dawww a giggler
[Private Chat] Ro: XD
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: lovely eeyes
Deoridhe Quandry: Thank you. A friend of mine made them.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: nice job..and breast too, smiles
Deoridhe Quandry: Those are mostly the corset. It's a very good bit of mesh.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: yeah, realy good..
[Private Chat] Deoridhe Quandry: And he's talking about my breasts. >.> Bets on how long it will take him to ask me for sex?
[Private Chat] Charlie: Catlyn is a girl's name btw Deo, did you notice that?
[Private Chat] Deoridhe Quandry: Yup, but male body. Sometimes a G I R L?
[Private Chat] Charlie: BURR is missing the lesbian hitting on Deo!!!
[Private Chat] Charlie: LOL
Deoridhe Quandry: Creators on Second Life are very skilled.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: yes, is a wonderful place for everything
Deoridhe Quandry: Not everything, but certainly a place for some creators to do wonderful work.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: yes, well to meet cute girls loke you too giggles
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: like*
Deoridhe Quandry: I suppose. ^.^
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: :))
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: hug's
Deoridhe Quandry: Hugs?
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: yes
That is when I notice he has triggered a "hug" animation. I'm wary of animations from virtual strangers in Second Life, so I prefer to not accept them; it may say hug and do very different things, after all.
Deoridhe Quandry: No thank you. I just met you.
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: so disgusting you are huh, fuck you then
Deoridhe Quandry laughs. "Wow, are you really so pathetic that a single no makes you abusive?"
[Girl Name, Boy Shape]: sorry busy a bit
[Private Chat] Deoridhe Quandry: And "you are cute" to "you are disgusting" in a single no.
[Private Chat] Charlie: Wow... only took two letters.
[Private Chat] Deoridhe Quandry: Astonishing, isn't it?
[Private Chat] Charlie: totally
In many of my posts of this sort I've talked about how this process of being hit on in public is not really a complement - that it is more about the person making the approach than any actual interest in me. The exchange above is a clear example of this - the second I asserted myself as someone who could say "no," even by not responding, this person became first covertly and then overtly hostile. That's because this isn't ultimately about me at all - I am a receptical of all of his assumptions about women and the purpose we serve in his life, and any deviation from what he thinks should happen - e.g. he complements my breasts and I consent to physical contact with him - is met with not just hostility but extreme and rapid hostility.
This is also part of why women are so reluctant to say no, even politely, in situations where this hostility can be followed up by violence. On Second Life I am safe. Short of griefing me - and there are tons of ways of responding to griefing - he can't harm me, and so it's safe for me to be completely honest and defend my own boundaries. If someone like this were hitting on me offline, though, I would be much more likely to lie and escape as quickly as possible, consenting to what I need to in order to stave off the inevitable overt hostile response to a no as I seek out a permanent escape. In a world where a simple "no thank you" is met with "fuck you," from entitled creeps, the best defense for women is to not be clear.

How NOT to Be a Manager on Second Life
A couple of nights ago, four friends and I were goofing around and decided to go to a well-known Sandbox to play around. One of our friends, Nami, went afk at the landing point, and so to keep us all together, the remaining four of us pushed her off of the landing area (where it was no-build) to the green (where it was build) so that we could put her in a ball and roll her to a corner until she came back.
While we were standing around waiting for Faust to build the Ball of Transportation, I was suddenly kicked to the next sim over. I have to admit, I initially thought I was orbited because that's exactly how it seemed the last time; it wasn't until I saw the message below that I began to think it wasn't a griefer, but it seemed very strange that I would be kicked out of a sim while standing there and watching a friend build something.
[2013/11/06 22:16:19] Second Life: [Resident] ejected you from this land.
I was very confused, and so were my friends (we were chatting over voice) and so one of them - Fluxa - teleported me back, but I was bounced back to my home by something else, which doesn't appear to have remained in my log. A moment later, Fluxa said she had been ejected as well - but weirdly none of our other three friends were kicked. Someone grabbed the rules, trying to figure out why were were kicked; since Fluxa and I were both dressed in Lolita, we thought perhaps it was because we were mistaken for children. Not wanting to make assumptions, I contacted the person in question.
[2013/11/06 22:20:22] Deoridhe Quandry: Excuse me, why did you eject me?
I never received a response - and I mean that quite literally. At no point did this person ever respond to me. He did respond to Fluxa, but not with anything approaching an answer. We eventually discovered he thought Fluxa and I were pushing Faust, an assumption made all the more incredible by the fact that Fluxa and Faust are partners in Second Life and all of us were standing around each other on the green when first I and then Fluxa was banned. [Her perspective is outlined here.]
After some checking around, I found another manager who was online and had a deeply unproductive interaction. I have no idea if he agreed with [Resident] or not, but he did direct me to who seemed to be the current head manager of the Sandbox, as the Sandbox Group Creator was no longer part of the group.
[2013/11/06 22:30:54] Deoridhe Quandry: Excuse me, Mr. [Manager]; do you have a moment to speak with me regarding the Fermi Landgroup you manage?
[2013/11/06 22:31:27] [Manager]: Yes what do you need ?
[2013/11/06 22:31:55] Deoridhe Quandry: I was just banned for playing with a friend of mine in the group by [Resident] and I was wondering if there was a way to appeal the ban?
[2013/11/06 22:32:09] Deoridhe Quandry: He apparently banned me for being one of four people pushing a fifth friend of ours into the building area.
[2013/11/06 22:32:20] Deoridhe Quandry: But he refused t respond to me; he responded to a friend he also banned.
[2013/11/06 22:33:10] Deoridhe Quandry: Fluxa Core
[2013/11/06 22:34:32] [Manager]: well it is him you will need to talk to he can take you off the list but he must do it or the owner. I would help if I could
[2013/11/06 22:34:54] Deoridhe Quandry: He refuses to respond to me. 8/ But I will contact her - what's her full name?
[2013/11/06 22:35:29] [Manager]: [Owner] ... even better I think good luck
[2013/11/06 22:35:41] Deoridhe Quandry: Thank you so kindly.
[2013/11/06 22:35:54] [Manager]: :)
So, as recommended, I sent the following message to the owner.
Dear Ms. [OWNER]:
This evening (11-06, around 10:00 SLT) at [XXX] Sandbox, I am my friends teleported in to do some building and playing around. Approximately ten to fifteen minutes after I was there with my four friends, I was ejected by [RESIDENT]). When my friends teleported me back (I was confused by being ejected) I was ejected again by an object and now I seem to be banned from the sim.
I contacted Mr. [RESIDENT], but he did not respond. Mr. [MANAGER] was online at the time but said he could not help me, and directed me to you.
Mr. [RESIDENT] did respond to a friend of mine (Fluxa Core, also banned) saying the ban was for pushing a mutual friend of ours (Nami Lithanos) who was afk at the time. We wanted to take her with us to the building area, and when she returned she informed him that we were her friends and not griefing her [Ed. I was wrong about this - he contacted Faust]. He refused to lift the ban, however. Also confusingly, the two other people who were pushing Nami (Faust Steamer and grammaticalerror) were neither ejected nor banned.
I would appreciate your help in this matter, as I find the events highly confusing and disturbing. I wanted to play with my friends, not get banned from a sim.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Deoridhe Quandry
We did eventually become unbanned after [Resident] contacted Faust, who had been one of the four pushing Nami onto the green - one of the two curiously not ejected and banned - and he told [Resident] that we were friends. All of us wondered why he simply had not done this at first - especially since Faust was one of the people pushing others; it seemed simply incomprehensible.
I did receive a response from the Owner, eventually, and that is what inspired this post, because I simply couldn't believe that not only did the owner of the Sandbox encourage her Managers to ban people without anyone involved in an interaction registering a complaint, she also significantly did not respond to any of the concerns I raised. Instead, she cut and pasted a response to Fluxa. This is, of course, her right - being the Owner of a Sandbox doesn't mean one actually has to put any effort into the job, any more than her managers need to learn to respond to IMs or ask for information before banning people, but it certainly cemented my opinion of her sim and showed that her staff mismanagement was a direct result of her wishes.
Hello Deoridhe,
I will simply paste here the message I sent to your friend Fluxa about the events last night on [XXX]:
[06:39] [Owner]: When you arrived in [XXX] and started pushing your friends, it appeared to be a griefing, so the manager was quite right to eject you. We are not in the habit of patiently contacting griefers to plead with them not to abuse others on the sim as it is no in their nature to respond to such requests. In view of the circumstances, I affirm [Manager]'s choice to send you home, and also his choice to unban you. In the future, would you kindly either take active play such as pushing to the vehicle area (the landmark for which I am providing you) [Ed. She did not provide me with this landmark] or contact a manager BEFORE you appear to be breaking the sim rules against harrassment. It would make things much easier for us. Also, it might do to contact [Manager] and apologize for the inconvenience. Have a good day.
One of the frustrating things in Second Life is the arbitrariness of applied rules. Not only did only two of the four people pushing other people get banned, but a Manager choosing to enforce the rules is now considered an inconvenience to the manager, and in some places people are expected to contact those in their surroundings to announce that they aren't engaging in ill-defined harassment - remember there were FOUR of us pushing a fifth, but only two of the four were banned. It also ignores the simple fact that both Fluxa and I contacted the manager, indicating we were more than responsive to IMs.
Inaccuracy of this magnitude is both unbecoming and pathetic.
Also of note - once both Fluxa and I were unbanned we remained in the sim in a sort of ...defiance, and [Resident] circled around us at one point and paused to listen in to our very fascinating discussion of AOs for a while. He never said anything, but he had to come quite a ways to stand fifteen feet away from us, as we had moved to a far corner of the sim to dance together and chat, not wanting to have something one of us did mislabeled "harassment" again.
I seriously doubt this post will have any effect on the sim in question. They are major and established, and I'm not even naming them. I do hope that enumerating this interaction will give other, more responsible Owners and Managers pause, though, in how they interact with other residents and whether they should be a manager if they consider doing a self-imposed job an "inconvenience". If one is going to ban people for presumed harassment, it's rather more an inconvenience for the people who were orbited and banned - and their friends who are trying to get them unbanned - than it is for a person who seemingly can't respond to an IM.

How NOT to Pick up a Chick in Second Life - Episode 11
So... I was out taking pictures with a flat cutout of Rodvik Linden, as one does, when a figure walked right up to me, IMed me, then went away very quickly. Most of our conversation happened with him a hundred meters away, a little green dot on my minimap, and I was floored by how quickly he just vanished; this entire exchange took part in less than five minutes, and by the time he hit enter he had moved away from where I was so I have no idea what he looked like in world except for a vague sense of dark tan skin in my visual field for a quarter of a second.
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: hey how are ou
Deoridhe Quandry: Hello, I'm fine. How are you?
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: great thank you
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: 28 m canada here
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: you?
This inspired me to check out his profile and despite his being over a month old it was literally empty except for his not-of-him profile picture, one group, and his Second Life page - which was full of pictures of him having sex, most of them threesomes and at some sex club, judging by the art on the walls. This is why I'm confident labeling him as one of a long line of sexual seekers on Second Life even though he was never overtly sexual with me.
Deoridhe Quandry: Old f Azure Springs.
Lest anyone think I'm giving anything away here, my avatar is clearly female (or he wouldn't have messaged me) and Azure Springs is where my Linden Home is.
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: old? haha
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: why you say it like that?
Deoridhe Quandry: Why did you say it like you did?
[U Giv Teh Seckz?]: hmm interesting
Deoridhe Quandry: Hel, why is offline data interesting? This is Second Life. Everyone's more interesting than their demographics.
He never responded beyond that - once again showing the sheer shallowness of interest these kinds of men have in women. I'm increasingly finding this question a compelling one, though. Given than online one can be anything one wishes, given how limiting demographics can be and how narrow the demographics sought (age, gender, geographical location), why is there such a significant population of people who always seem to start there? What is particularly compelling about these three demographics which drive them from simple chat protocols all the way through to an immersive virtual world like Second Life?

How NOT to Pick up a Chick in Second Life - Episode 10
Oh my gods, it's been so long since this happened last, I was almost bouncing when I got the initial IM, expecting where it would end up. He was almost a classic case; his profile was completely empty except for some dating sim groups, he was only a little over a month old, he was over a hundred meters away from me, he clearly hadn't looked at my profile much less read it, and he was completely incapable of anything resembling a conversation, up to and including spelling three letter words.
[I Luv Bling]: hey baby
Deoridhe Quandry: Hello.
[I Luv Bling]: how r u?
Deoridhe Quandry: I'm doing pretty well. How are you?
[I Luv Bling]: im cool ty
Deoridhe Quandry: That's nice.
[I Luv Bling]: how is the day going on
Deoridhe Quandry: It's going well.
[I Luv Bling]: hmm nice to see u
Deoridhe Quandry: Your ability to see from 100 meters away is impressive.
[I Luv Bling]: sry nice to hear
[I Luv Bling]: can i see u
Deoridhe Quandry: If you're using a graphical browser, you definitely can.
[I Luv Bling]: can u teleport me to ur place
Deoridhe Quandry: What do you mean "my place"? And why?
[I Luv Bling]: to see u
Deoridhe Quandry: We're on the same sim. If you know your way around, you can find me. I'm in public.
[I Luv Bling] tries to teleport you
Deoridhe Quandry: I don't want to teleport to you, thank you.
He stopped contacting me, and indeed left the sim we were in, as soon as I flat out refused to do what he wanted. I suppose, if his eventual goal was a minute on poseballs with my naked avatar like I expect, this sort of sorting through people makes sense; he wants someone compliant and obedient, not someone who has an identity and opinions. Like usual, like always it seems, the kind of men prone to sending these IMs aren't interested in meeting other people, they're interested in whatever they can get and drop you as soon as you don't conform to their will. It's sad, really.
I want to contrast this with another conversation, at the same place, this one in open chat. This person was also male, also about a month old, and approached me while I was posing on one of the entry levels of the sim I was in. In contrast to [I Luv Bling], he spoke to me in open chat and was in the same general area as I was when he approached me. Similarly, though, his profile was nearly empty.
[Newbie]: Greetings Deoridhe
Deoridhe Quandry: Hello.
[Newbie]: What year is it here?
Deoridhe Quandry: Year? Huh?
[Newbie]: Is this place futuristic?
Deoridhe Quandry: It looks it to me, I'm not sure.
[Newbie]: I see so you are wandering around as well
Deoridhe Quandry: Yes, I'm taking pictures.
[Newbie]: cool
[Newbie]: sorry to bother you
Deoridhe Quandry: It's all right. I'm not sure this is an rping sim, though. It seems to be more of a decorative store.
Deoridhe Quandry: There were no RP rules at the landing point that I saw.
[Newbie]: RP rules?
[Newbie]: role playing rules?
Deoridhe Quandry: For a roleplaying sim. Most of them have roleplaying rules and a brief notecard on history.
[Newbie]: I see
Deoridhe Quandry: At least all the rps I've been in.
[Newbie]: not sure what a roleplaying sim is but thanks
Deoridhe Quandry: This one had a notecard welcoming machinima makers and photographers.
[Newbie]: Please forgive my ignorance
[Newbie]: : )
Deoridhe Quandry: It's a sim where you roleplay - where you have a character and act out it's story with other people.
[Newbie]: oh cool ty
Deoridhe Quandry: As opposed to all of Second Life, which is usually not roleplay though it can be.
[Newbie]: Well, I am off to further explore. btw, we can buy L$?
Deoridhe Quandry: Yes, you can with money.
Deoridhe Quandry: You have to sign up with paypal or a credit card.
[Newbie]: i see thank you
Deoridhe Quandry: You're welcome.
[Newbie]: bye
Deoridhe Quandry: Here, have my new resident kit. It can help. ^.^
[Newbie]: thanks
Deoridhe Quandry: You're welcome. Have fun
Notice the difference. Notice the comments about where we were, direct questions in response to what I said, the interest in our surroundings and in learning more, and the complete lack of reliance on me being obedient or doing what he wanted. This is called a conversation. This is how to approach someone in public. He still didn't pick me up, but I'm - like - made of lead and you need a lot of strength to actually pick me up.

How NOT to Communicate in Second Life
So, I think I mentioned this before, but whenever I blog someone's creations, I sent them a notecard with a link to the blog post. It's a pretty simple notecard, which says:
I just wanted to let you know that I featured your store on my blog in the post address below.
[link to blog]
Thanks so much for your beautiful creations! Please keep up the wonderful work.
Sincerely,
Deoridhe Quandry
I honestly never thought of this as difficult to comprehend until yesterday, when... well, the following showed up in my Offline IM record. [Edited to clarify: The creator's first language is clearly English since all of the releases and communications come solely in fluent English.]
[2013/04/03 19:34] [Illiterate Creator]: (Saved Wed Apr 03 04:36:03 2013)Hi there :) I am terribly sorry but I don't work with bloggers. Thank you kindly for the interest however. I wish you the best of luck and have a wonderful day!
I thought there must have been some kind of communication error, so I clarified, also in IM.
[2013/04/03 19:36] Deoridhe Quandry: Um, I was just letting you know I blogged your work, not expecting anything, but I shall try to remember to not send you a notice the next time I feature your products if you would prefer.
[2013/04/03 19:36] Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later.
Imagine my surprise when I log on today to the following:
[21:31] [Illiterate Creator]: (Saved Thu Apr 04 06:15:02 2013)Hi there :) I am terribly sorry but I don't work with bloggers. Thank you kindly for the interest however. I wish you the best of luck and have a wonderful day!Clearly, I'm not dealing with a person... I'm dealing with an avatar answering machine. Equally clearly, someone doesn't want to be blogged ever! Lesson learned!

How NOT to pick up a chick in Second Life
It's been so long since one of these, I hardly knew what to do! I was wandering around The Wash picking up cheap yet lovely things (see my outfit for some examples, and some more lovely Arcade prizes), when a stranger contacted me. Less than a day old, I have no idea how he found his way to The Wash - maybe those portals in the new starting area? He must have seen me, or something, because he IMed me instead of talking in local chat, but he wasn't near me when I looked for him.
[WhereYouAre?]: hi
Deoridhe Quandry: Hello.
[WhereYouAre?]: where you are
Deoridhe Quandry: Excuse me?
[WhereYouAre?]: oh,sorry,i'm Chinese
Deoridhe Quandry: All right. I don't understand what you asked, though.
[WhereYouAre?]: i just want to make friends
Deoridhe Quandry: Ok.
Deoridhe Quandry: What are you interested in?
[WhereYouAre?]: rap song and listen music
Deoridhe Quandry: You might want to look for a rap club in Second Life, then.
[WhereYouAre?]: what about you?
Deoridhe Quandry: I'm not as fond of rap music, though I like a few select rappers.
[WhereYouAre?]: where are you come from?
Well, that attempt at an actual conversation died fast...
Deoridhe Quandry: Right now I'm at the wash.
Second Life: [WhereYouAre?] has offered to teleport you to their location.
Deoridhe Quandry: No thank you. I'm shopping.
[WhereYouAre?]: i feel dizzy when i walking in the second life
Deoridhe Quandry: It takes a little getting used to.
[WhereYouAre?]: are you American?
Deoridhe Quandry: Is that important?
[WhereYouAre?]: no no no
Deoridhe Quandry: All right, then.
[WhereYouAre?]: but i'm curious
Deoridhe Quandry: All right. I don't share offline information with strangers. You'll have to remain curious.
[WhereYouAre?]: hah,if i can make friends with you
Deoridhe Quandry: I don't understand.
[WhereYouAre?]: i no longer a stranger if i make friend with you
Deoridhe Quandry: That's a very big if, and even acquaintances don't get offline information. If you're willing to wait a couple years to feed your curiosity, though, feel free.
[WhereYouAre?]: i feel sorry
Deoridhe Quandry: Excuse me?
[WhereYouAre?]: yes
Deoridhe Quandry: I don't understand.
And he logged off.
What baffles me about this interaction was how he felt the need to deny something was important despite it clearly being the most important thing to him. I'm not sure what information it would give him if he knew my nationality; I'm not sure why he told me his! Is it simply that so many people don't know how to maintain a conversation and make actual friends? Was there something else he was aiming at? I have no idea, and I doubt I will ever find out. Instead, he vanished offline - likely to never log in again since he didn't get whatever it was he wanted.

How NOT to Sell Things in Second Life
So I was minding my own business, hanging out in a store after buying a few things and sorting through my notecards, when I saw yelling in my local chat.
[21:00] 尺e Łove (reginalove.core): BOM DIA EU TENHO BORBOLETA DE CORPO QUE VOA NO CORPO VERDE E PRETA / 30 LINDENS
[21:00] ReginaLove Core: GOOD DAY I HAVE THE BODY OF BUTTERFLY FLYING IN GREEN AND BLACK BODY / 30 LINDENS
[21:01] 尺e Łove (reginalove.core): COMBINA COM FADA PRETA

I was entirely prepared to ignore her, since it was just local chat and spam happens, but then she IMed me and, well... I got a little creative, so how can I resist now?
