Sunday Squee: UBUMExORIGAMI

Pathway to the Afterlife

August is the month of ghosts in Japan, and Ubume has returned with another if it's Hunt Stories to chill you to your bones! It starts today, August 11th, and will go until September 10th - so you have some time, but this tends to be time and effort intensive and well worth the work! When you're not playing, you can check out the large Shopping Area with tons of amazing Japanese and horror themed items for sale and an amazing environment for this haunted month. I ended up dressing myself on the sim, and I quite like the effect! The setting itself is lovely as well - spooky and atmospheric with many little touches along the way.

These fantastic story hunts are done via a HUD (Japanese and English versions) and have a lot of options and beautiful sets. They also have a strict script limit and are making the Free Starter Kit available via the marketplace, so you can get set up in private. The HUD itself will track your script amount, so once you're set at under 1000kb try to stay there. Once you put on the HUD agree to let it teleport you and you're pretty much good to go.

Take Flight

The HUD will take over your screen as you interact with your environment, showing videos to advance the plot and zooming in on important items in your surroundings. A small white triangle in the bottom right corner is your way out of whatever focus you find yourself in. The HUD also tracks your location in the school (clicking on that will open a map), the items in your inventory, and the different versions of Newspapers you can pick up as you go. The Newspapers have red text which will direct you toward the most important details.

The videos are through YouTube, so you may need to take some steps to ensure that you can see them. Take the time in the welcome area to double check this - the plot is important and will help you complete the story and figure out what to do. This story hunt has multiple endings to encourage replaying. Once you've figured out one ending, it becomes a lot easier to figure out the rest, but I recommend either notes along the way or taking advantage of the two guides I'm working on once they're published.

Stopping for Snacks

When you walk through the gate and are teleported to the story start, the movie on the website begins - setting us into the spirit of the story. We fell asleep in class, somehow didn't wake up when everyone left, and are now late. As you approach the exit you realize the doors are locked - you're trapped in the school! Along the wall are two bulletin boards with copies of the first pages of the school's paper on them, outlining some local haunting. The papers are in Japanese on the board, but if you have the English HUD they will open up in English on there using the "Paper" button.

I'm creating two guides - one organizing the plot by location in the two school buildings and the courtyard while the other focuses on the deaths and endings available - which will be linked when they go up. Both of those guides are spoiler heavy but might be able to help you if you get stuck, and offer an opportunity to enjoy the story in brief in the future. You also get an UBUME Log Server which will allow you to replay the images and video associated with each of the deaths and endings on a different sim. I hope you end up playing an enjoying this wonderful story hunt! I had a blast.
