Genre: New Republic
The French New Republic is the theme for this round of Genre - that unnerving period of time after the French Revolution, when mores and values were overturned for good reasons and often violent ends. When I was a child, I perceived this revolution as serving all of France; as an adult, I'm all too aware of the privilege of those who took power after the initial riots. As power and prejudice combine to threaten the US now, as progress toward equality slams into fear of change, these historical revolutions seem a lot more relevant. So was who ended up suffering the most - the poor, people of color, religious minorities; I no longer believe that time arcs toward justice, but I hope we have enough people to make justice and it's siblings mercy and compassion, more central than they are now. The US is an old republic, now; we'll have to see what we can make of it, imperfect as we are.
The guillotine - an attempt at perfect and painless execution, is most associated with this era and shows up both in Anachron's earrings and +XAnSA+'s variety of necklaces. It's only up close that the subtlety of their differences is apparent; +XAnSA+ has a delicate single cord holding up the deadly blade while Anachron has the double security of two cords and some extra wood reinforcement. Their quality otherwise is equally high, well textured and fitted well to ear or neck. Anachron has the added bonus if gem accepts in five different colors while +XAnSA+ comes with differently colored guillotines - silver shown here, while gold and black are also available for purchase. Tucked underneath are sweet shoes from Bliensen + MaiTai making use of the new kitten heel height offered by Slink. The buckle-front and wooden heel is very simple but stylish, a prize of la guillotine in the hands of the poor, perhaps?
My outfit is also combining two stores - in this case lingerie from Appliers R Us and a mini-dress from Fission. The Appliers R Us set comes in five different colors - all of them available with one purchase - on either texture layers or through applier HUDs - Slink, Maitreya, Kitties Lair, Lola, Cute / Phat Azz, included. The undershirt, corset, and bloomers can all be worn separately or it can be worn together for a single cohesive look - I'm showing the corset and bloomers in these images. Fission's corset-style mini-dress is available in the standard sizes, though I'm showing the medium over a Slink body. It comes in four sweet colors, and while the length isn't typical for the era, the delicate curlicues are very reminiscent of the delicate Baroque fabric which may have fallen from nobility to peasantry in a day. Find these and other reinventions of a bloodier and bygone age at Genre through mid-July, all available for shockingly low prices.
