Monday Meme: Surrealism Challenge

Meme Monday: Surrealism Challenge

The minute I read Strawberry's Surrealism Challenge - to bring some surrealism into our Second Lives - I knew exactly what I wanted to do, though not exactly what I wanted to wear. I had run across the Musiclandia Sim about a week or two back when I swung by LEA to see what they were up to and lament the lack of attention I've given to tracking these awesome hotbeds of creativity in Second Life. The creator was there, which was a little embarrassing; I always feel self-conscious when experiencing a creation while the creator is right there. It was charming even then, partially built; I particularly liked the amount of play it encouraged, through different ways of interacting musically with the sim. So as soon as I read surrealism, I thought of this land of enormous instruments which had made me feel tiny, and I thought of playing an instrument on an instrument, but I needed something truly unique and not possible offline to wear, to really bring the idea alive.

I am always a little saddened that we don't have more reality breaking clothing like this, especially given how easy it is within Second Life, but I think the bizarre and outre often disturb people; earlier, hanging with some friends, a friend had put on a Salvador Dali inspired stilts dress which is all over the feeds right now, and deeply disturbed a friend of a friend, who kept commenting on how creepy it was. I love it, if worry it's over-saturated, but I suspect this friend is not alone in finding the surreal, the truly not possible elsewhere effects unsettling. However, a long while ago I had seen a few different variations of dresses that are other things - and the two which had struck with me was the dress that was a birdcage, and this dress - the dress that was an hourglass. It took some doing to figure out who made it and where I could get it - google is a fantastic thing - and once I did the rest of the look simply fell out of my inventory in a wash of perfection. I have rarely had an outfit come together as swiftly and satisfyingly as this did - and I fully intend on doing an entire photoshoot so that you can enjoy all of the details I was able to sneak into it, which are much harder to see at a distance.

  3. Thank you all so very much~ I really recommend thinking about dream-like unrealism, Picsbypeeps; or check out some of the surrealist art. It began by people trying to capture the feeling of their dreams in art, though. The sim and dress are totally incredible, and I love how they all came together here.
