Creamy and Sweet

Spinning About

Dressing corsets - even gorgeous overbust ones like this one from Dilly Dolls - is always a challenge. I'm really not a pants person, so it often ends up being a matter of hunting out a skirt to tuck underneath (or place over it like I did the last time I dressed one of these corsets). This time I stole bits from a Caverna Obscura gown and then edited the skirt down to mostly fit under the bottom edge, and the back of the draped top so that it went over the open lacing in the back. I also tinted the purple flowers dark to match the dark stripes on the shoes. I ended up really liking the effect of it - the combination almost seems to fluoresce in the light. In retrospect, the only thing I'm not sure about is the Wasabi Pills hair - the style is cute and awesome but the color is a bit off from the rest of the look. The shoes from Dilly Dolls were one of my last minute purchases at the Vintage Faire right before it ended - I totally couldn't resist these adorable skulls on the chunky heels. The bright on black is really striking as well; expect to see it again in the future! I haven't done hot pink and black in a very long time, so I really need to step it up.

Swan and Skull

I'm honestly not pulling cheerful off very well, but I am feeling more at peace. I really loved this sim; it was simple and sweet with tiny bright colors shining here and there - like a spot of brilliant blue, or a planting of brilliant red. I'm feeling that sort of emptiness of a cleared field or smooth lake before more life comes up and roughs things up again.

2012 Color Challenge: Week 35 - Feldgrau

Manicure

This has been a sad week for me, and a busy month. I've been overwhelmed at work, and just when I thought the breaking-point was near there was a death, so I'm still reeling. Feldgrau was an oddly appropriate color, being roughly the color of concrete on a rainy day, and I ended up fulfilling it on the last day of the Vintage Faire, having spectacularly managed to not go to the sims at all before the last four hours. I have an enormous backlog of inventory, too, and I'm seriously considering hiding under a bush and never coming out! It's funny how too much of a thing - even a wonderful thing like clothing in Second Life - can leave one completely at a loss! Loss has really been a theme lately for me, loss of spirit, loss of mind, loss of people. This last week has been about going underground for me, retreating from interaction in order to regroup and renew. The heat reminds me of the concrete, the rain of the storms around the gulf, the darkness of those moments when one is left alone facing eternity.

Wilting Flower

This dress from Orquidea has been on my wishlist for a while, and when I saw how perfect it was for the color Feldgrau I couldn't resist. It's a beautifully put together dress - the texture all but seamless into the prims (one sculpted, the other flexy) which make up the skirt. The detailing of the top is perfect, looking layered and rich yet still with the bronze, gray, and brown that characterize Steampunk. I paired it with this gorgeous jewelry set from Primalot that thankfully had a brown in its enormous variety of textures that matched the general theme perfectly. I've had this set in my inventory for a while, sequestered away in my new folder under jewelry, and hunted it out when I sorted through some of what waits for me. It's moments like that, when the perfect item simply tumbles out, that I am both saddened and grateful for my enormous backlog of items.

Stepping Out

What really got me started on this look, though, were these awesome stockings from Adore & Abhor - a gorgeous set of satiny stockings with a peacock detail that I simply couldn't resist. As soon as I saw them I knew I needed to pair them with something so I could take naughty upshots, and I think I pulled that off well. The shoes were a find from Censored, a new-to-me store I found wandering aimlessly through the faire; I thought they added a nice retro touch to an outfit which would scandalize anyone in the Victorian Era. The hair from Exile is a recent release, another of his rigged mesh glories, and I paired two of my favorite cosmetic stores over my perennial De La Soul skin - Elymode and Mock hit it out of the park again (I wear Mock's toast lip a lot when I go neutral; funny how that works! I try other lips, I swear, but toast is almost always the perfect neutral shade!). In the end, I ended up really liking this neutral look - despite browns and neutrals not really being on my list of happy things! I'll have to follow this up with something far too bright, though, or I'll lose my rep for over-the-top cheer!

In Mourning

Square Cloudy Day

Death is before me today:
like the recovery of a sick woman,
like going forth into a garden after sickness.

Death is before me today:
  like the odor of myrrh,
like sitting under a sail in a good wind.

Death is before me today:
  like the course of a stream;
like the return of a woman from battle to her house.

Death is before me today:
like the clearing of the sky,
like a woman grasping what she did not know before.

Death is before me today:
like the home that a woman longs to see,
after years spent as a captive.

2012 Color Challenge: Week 34 - Russet

Afraid of Heights

Russet is a curious color - the swatch looks gray, but all the versions of it were reddish brown, so I went with that. It's a potato color, earthy and warm and hinting at things hiding under the surface. I've felt a lot like that lately - like there are dark things moving inside of me where I can't see, and what I can see I have such mixed feelings about. I think it's inevitable, in any examined life, to hit a point where you look back on what you created and have to ask, "Is it good?"

Not good in the sense of pure, or somehow without cruelty or shadow, but good in terms of functional and beautiful. I'm not sure a life exists without cruelty, or a mind exists without shadow - the brightest light just makes the shadows hide and become even darker. Accepting the things about myself that I don't like, the actions I take which were wrong, the places where I misstep - that is as critical as seeing clearly the beauty and joy I create, the good that I do, and where my balance is perfect.

Single Frame Stories: Challenge 1 and 2

Single Fram Story Challenge 1 - Last Words

Single Frame Stories are a new challenge from Botgirl Questi and Whiskey Monday, inspired by Crap Mariner 100 Word Stories Challenge (which I haven't participated in yet, but I keep thinking of it). Submission deadline is Friday Night for each week's post, which goes up on Saturday, and a lot of the images are really fun and amazing. The first challenge was "Last Words," and ironically I did an afterlife hunt after the week was over... so I made a picture anyway (top). This week's challenge was "Illumination", and I'm using an old picture of mine where there were brightly glowing strawberries I got my hands on, and a wonderful chance smile and blink (bottom). I initially wasn't going to participate, but when I saw this weeks challenge and remembered some of my pictures... well, I couldn't resist. The flickr account is up, too, so you can see things in advance of the gallery posts.

Single Frame Story - Challenge 2 Illumination

Journey Through the Afterlife

I got the cage!

One of the reasons I really love the creations of Japanese builders is the multiple layers included, in this case a "hunt" you can run three times (pretty quickly) to get a different ending each time, depending on how you choose and what you have in your inventory (one of the endings can only be gotten on a second run through). I cut my teeth on Japanese video games, so the idea of morality as an inherent part of gameplay which leads to different resolutions is old hat. I love the world building, too - the aspects of an afterlife which are so strange to Usians but have a ring of familiarity for me, despite my Anglo entirety, due to the amount of manga and video games I've experienced over the years. While the entire hunt wasn't enough to really give me a fright, I did jump a few times due to the effects and some of the images are a little disturbing. The way you get to the game, by the way, is to walk forward and fall NOT to follow the landmark; learn from my errors!

2012 Color Challenge: Week 33 - Tyrian Purple

Turning Into the Light

Tyrian Purple is an amazing color. I had actually photographed this color before - though not under the name - but I'm so thrilled there's a name for this over-saturated, overwhelming color. I decided to go with a completely blown-out color scheme with this one, making my skin incredibly pale and exaggerating the dark of the hair and dress even more. I started with a white hair, but I think the black works better as a frame for my skin, filling in some of the gaps. I really ended up liking the combination of over and under-saturated, the vivid solidity of my clothing and hair against the fragility and impermanence of the flowers in the mist. They have a cartoonish feel, even at full color, especially with the bright, primary colors of the flowers with their shiny green stems. I feel kind of shiny, too - awesome shiny outfit from Sn@tch, awesome shiny boots from KS Creations. I also feel like I'm hiding, because I am - secure behind an avatar in a way I am unable to be secure out in the big, bad, scary world.

Doll Explorations

Back in my Box

A long time ago I picked up a Bloom Doll avatar, but it took me ages to take pictures. I kept getting distracted, finding other things to do, other outfits to wear, and then mesh came out and life got very busy! But now I've managed to swing around again, pulling out an old purchase to try it on for size. It's definitely harder to find poses that work with it - and I substituted in tiny wings from Boom that wouldn't cut through my head or hair. Like Petites, one of the things you have to be able to do is resize the hair - this time up which is usually easier - and the Diversity updo I chose was perfect for that. I chose an updo because longer hair would end up being longer than my body before it was big enough for my head; I considered trying to upsize a shorter hair to make it "long" but an updo was just easier. Doll body all but required a doll hair, and this dress and shoes from Feather was actually the inspiration for putting out an avatar I'd long left moldering in my online closet. The Bloom Doll avatar makes me feel even less like "myself" than event the petite body does, though, so I'm not sure it will ever be part of my regular dress.

It's interesting the extent to what I look like on the screen enhances what I feel about how much I am involved. I have a certain set of characteristics, and the only exceptions are avatars I've played a long while, like my WoW Tauren, who also shared the second and more important piece of my online identity, my name. Deoridhe has been my name for a very long time, and is "me" in the way my offline name is also "me." In some ways, it's more me; there are people who share my offline name, but no one I have ever met who shared my online one. My online name is linked to all of my interests, a broad range of information; I try to keep it distinct from my offline identity in almost every way, though. It's a strange sort of distinction, though; I don't keep Deoridhe apart from my personal life - there are many individuals who know who I am in both realms - but I do from my professional life and from my identity in general. It is less a different distinct identity and more a mask for the purposes of privacy.

Cosmetics

I don't think my experience is common, and it may very well be in reaction to having a consistent identity across every online forum I'm on - and many I'm not - I have a tendency to "save" this identity in places where I'm not active. That brings up another interesting point; in offline reality, there isn't a sense of access to most places. I don't need to "reserve" who I am in, say, Mumbai because I am not physically in Mumbai. Online, though, there is a much broader access to things. There is an assumption that people will be on various online portals, have various accounts. There is also searchable access to a broad range of things. This comes up now and then; how reasonable is it to do a search on a potential date? On a potential employee? The recent move for employers to want access to peoples' facebook accounts is one indication of how inter-related the internet and offline reality have become. For years there have been rumblings of this connection through the spat of people fired for blogs and kicked out of schools for things posted on facebook. There was a lot of adult tut-tutting over the naivete of the young for putting things online, swiftly followed by adults doing the exact same thing.

The internet gives a sense of familiarity, comfort, and localness which belies the reality that it is broad, strange, and millions of people we don't know could be looking. There are small, locked gardens here and there, but usually there is only an account creation between no access and access. When Second Life profiles were opened to the internet, many of the users who knew about it reacted with horror; for the first time, profiles were easily searchable. I know people who put offline details in their "First Life" tab who were unhappy with those details suddenly being linked with a more pseud-anonymous identity; that is a sudden and stark reminder of how much of our privacy in these walled gardens exist at the whim of the companies holding the data. Facebook and Google both face serious fines for their misuse of private details, but those fines are only a drop in the bucket of income those companies have. Increasingly, people are keeping files and property in the "cloud", which is another word for on the computers of other people. At least one "cloud" company has lost their computers to the government in a copyright dispute, and more may well follow, even assuming there doesn't become a way to search through peoples' information for "convenience". Who we are is commercialized on the internet, and that is another factor in how identity will be experience by all of us.

How not to pick up a Trans Person in SL

Mother and Chicks

Honour lured me to this lovely sim to not-photograph things, and I was reminded of something I was handed last week to share with you all - something more in line with my How NOT to... series. So strap youself in for some drama, and what snark I can summon from the depths of my cockles. This one is a little more... explicit than most of what I share, so I hope you're not at work! This is the entirety of the conversation - the lovely person who shared this with me did not know the person at all. I tend to take consent fairly seriously, hence the Nom d'Insult for this post; yes, fondling someone without getting their consent first is at the very least sexual assault. That it happened in text only makes it less of a violation, but the basic intent is the same as far as I'm concerned.

Bridge Too Far

[Conversational Rapist] slides her finger over your lip giving you a little shh nose she starts to slide her plum up and down your shaft looking into your eyes. As pre cum starts to drip from the tip she takes her thumb and rolls it over the tip.
[Conversational Rapist] starts to go a little harder looking at you with lust in her eyes she leans in and kisses you on the neck her hand pumping you. She whispers softy. "Dont get to shy on me i just want to make you cum for me"
[Our Shero]: im not shy i do usually like a hello before im made to cum though
[Conversational Rapist] nibbles on the tip of your ear and moans softly "Sorry but dont this feel good?"[Conversational Rapist] pants you on the shoulder and stops. "Well if you dont think im cute then ok."
[Our Shero]: Your cute but I value respect of being able to cum
[Conversational Rapist]: Its not a lack of respect its just random hand job your cute im cute no real harm done.
[Our Shero]: you must be a young boy in rl huh?
[Our Shero]: trust me respect should always come first
[Conversational Rapist]: ummm no i'm not
[Conversational Rapist]: Just not a stuck up prude who wont put my feelings into a game
[Our Shero]: its a game but theres real people playing behind the avatars. Its usually polite and common sense to at least say hi and greet them before emoting sex with them
[Conversational Rapist]: In saying Hi how are you blah blah blah same old same old *snore* really makes things fun and different *yawns with boring thoughts of lame same old sex floating in her head*  Trust me some times its fun to skip the lame talk and just live a little
[Our Shero]: thats cool im sure there are plenty of people here willing to whore for you, You can just go find one of them.

Sunset Reflection on Tiptoe

This is evidence that yes, women can be creepers to. Our [Conversational Rapist] probably just viewed her actions as gaining instant interactive porn, but she clearly didn't care about the other person at all and that's objectification at it's most basic. Her instant jump from "I will fondle your penis and godmod you" to "You're a prude" is characteristic of the type - both male and female. Neither consent nor the feelings of the other person are important, just the selfish desires of the [Conversational Rapist]. Honestly, I'm finding it hard to snark the basic disregard of another person's humanity; I just think it's wrong. Yes, she stopped when he said no, but she proceeded to use insults as a means of getting her way and that looks no better in a woman's mouth than in a man's.

If you godmod another person for your own sexual satisfaction, you are an ASSHOLE and a textual rapist. If you then call the other person a prude, you are an ASSHOLE squared.

2012 Color Challenge: Week 32 Jonquil

Rime and Reason

Jonquil is a bright, cheerful, bouncy color that reminds me of summer wheat in the fields, or the flan I've recently gotten addicted to. Ironically, I ended up with icy scenes for this week - a solitary flowering of color here and there on a chilly, cool scene. High contrast, like hot fudge on cold vanilla ice cream, or the bite of icy at noon on Lammas. I have a weakness for high contrast; in Goth music I always liked the piping soprano above the bass baritone, the delicate cast against the resonant. I've left my apartment white both because I'm too lazy to paint it and so that the white can serve as a backdrop to my brilliantly shaded belongings and decorations. I've been spending the last several weekends working toward rearranging and cleaning things up, and it's been amazing to watch it gradually take shape in between other tasks.

All Right!

When I was in my teens, I took a class on making masks. It was at one of those self-reflective sorts of things, and most people went all meditative and subtle with their representations of themselves. I ended up deciding the black paint wasn't black enough and covering my mask with the back side of brilliant black and red fabric, so that it appeared black with even darker patterns on it. A black band of sequins divides the face between the eyes, but angled slightly, and below the bangles falls a vivid cloth of iridescent teal on black. I added feathers and a bit of gold, just to keep things interestingly, and the final result was such a stark contrast to the rest of the group that I have to admit I felt embarrassed by it; it was so theatrical and dramatic compared to everyone else's creations; it was such high contrast from the high minded and often ethereal conference. It still hangs on my wall, though, and I think it remains one of the clearer representations of myself, in all of my flashy, dramatic glory.

ICHP: These Boots Were Made For Walkin'!

Falling to Water

This awesome outfit is a sample of the new mesh dress available from Violent Seduction. The neat part about it, which sets it apart from other dresses in my opinion, is that each of the pieces is separate - shirt, vest, and skirt - so that you can mix and match if you like. Each outfit comes with black and white shirts, and I mixed and matched the vest from Death with the skirt from Coagulate. The skirt is lined inside (yay~!), enabling pictures like the one above, where you're looking up into the skirt. The shirt is also angled in so that it looks good form all angles. The vest isn't as solid, but from most angles you can't tell. The front and back is both open lacing with a cute little bow on top, and I love the effect of the shirt viewed underneath the vest; it looks so natural. The texturing along the bodice is amazingly clear and sweet, and I discovered a neat trick! If your texture isn't rezzing, you can edit the shirt and open the texture map to make it rez completely. I paired it with my favorite boots from Cipher, which seem to be a mainstay for me when it comes to bright purple clothing. The detailing really blew me away when I looked closer at them - check out those sweet little bows!

Wanton Reflection

The socks are amazing ones from G Field which I pull out all of the time, now. These are the ruffle topped, but she also has button topped ones. I set my katat0nik bloomers above them - another mainstay for my Lolita looks. I have to admit, I really like the gap between the top of the socks and the bottom of the bloomers, though if I was a proper Lolita  you would never see them! My jewelry is an awesome new release from Eclectica for the Vintage Faire, crown, necklace, bracelet, rings, and a hairpin and pin not shown. Its color change through an awesome HUD which lets you tint to almost every color. I have a serious soft spot for full tinting clothing because I have such a wide range of clothes which are of odd colors, and thus finding accessories for them is really difficult. This set will be a quick choice any time I need to match something more unusual.
