Polychrome hits Kansas

Image Description: Faerie in a rainbow dress standing near a front desk in a hotel upon which sits a bell.

One of my favorite series from my childhood was the Oz stories - not just the first one made famous by a movie, the Wizard of Oz, but all of L. Frank Baum's original novels, which I devoured as a child. Rereading recently I was struck anew by Polychrome, the rainbow's daughter, who danced off of the bow of the spectrum and was abandoned on land - only to meet up with Dorothy as she traveled with Button Bright and the Shaggy Man back to the Land of Oz. The stories hold up to time only with the patina of nostalgia, but they remain one of the early series where girls ran the show, from ruling Fairy Kingdoms, being the wisest in the land, or being universally beloved. They gave me an early image of what adventure could be in a girl-centric world, and I've carried that dream into my adulthood relatively unchanged.
