Color in our World
Sparkys is a new build by Romy Nayar on the MetaLES sim, and it offers both a glorious blank slate, and the opportunity to paint the world around you manifest within the world itself. You are given colors to pain the world with using mouselook, and from there you can transform a white canvas of light and dark in any manner you wish. You can accomplish a similar effect using windlight; a white and gray set of shapes and textures offer up a wonderful chance to really explore color as it is manifest in virtual light. The entire idea of painting the world virtually, so that others can see it in a context beyond pictures I put on my Flickr, has a resonance within and beyond this world, though. We very often see the world through our own lens, notice the things which are of significance to us and disregard the rest, paint a shared world in our own colors - but we are also painted by the world and by the assumptions and significances of other people. To a certain extent, we can control our own projections - though even those are often unconscious and unexamined - but we have no control at all over the projections of others or the decisions they make based on those projections.
A few recent events - some personal and some not - have gotten me thinking about the various aspects of projection and reputation in Second Life. Beyond what we create, reputation is central in a virtual world; it determines a lot of things - who will be included in events, who will collaborate with whom - and like reputation in offline contexts, it often travels outside of our knowledge and without any recourse on our part to ameliorate it. I suspect a review several years ago will mean I never again officially blog for an event I very much enjoy, but I'm unsure even whom to contact to ask if this is the case, and the very uncertainty introduces it's own sensitivity and impulse to obsess. I cannot control it, so the impulse to focus on it is overwhelming. I suspect people dislike me, I believe it is unwarranted, and so I want to scream from the hilltops "like me, please!" in such a way that people won't dislike me for the simple act of demonstrating my fear that they do. This is the irony of acquaintanceship in the world at large - part of how one becomes desirable is being cool, not desperate, so those who might need relationship most, people who feel isolated and alone, are most likely to alienate the people they just met. A reputation that one is clingy and demanding can spread even if one is unaware of it.
Reputation can serve a purpose within social groups; individuals who harm others or who are unreliable can gain a reputation, and thus new people can be forewarned about them; I saw that in play in a recent event, where one who had taken advantage of many others was systemically isolated from the event in order to minimize any damage they could do to it; lets call him Petrucio. From Petrucio's perspective, though, imagine the knowledge that opinions about him were being passed outside of his knowledge, and that harm caused by him was being minimized even while he thought he had done no harm. I am reasonably certain Petrucio is both unaware of the damage he does and that he does damage, but I cannot simultaneously help putting myself in his role and thinking back on my own experiences, where how people react to me seems sharply at odds with who I think I am. Which of our opinions should be privileged, given what we see is bent by our own assumptions and projections?
A lot of virtual ink is spilled about "drama", but in the end drama is largely about these disconnects between who we view ourselves and those we love as, and how those who don't know or like us think of us. Drama is about how we present ourselves and how other people react to it - and as such it is simultaneously pointless and the most important thing in the world. It is the result of strong emotions, of an attachment to things and people which inspire strong reactions. In a very real way, we are made by our relationships with other people - who we are as people plays out within our social connections with other people, and how people react to us changes who we are and what we share with others. Part of why I love drama is because I love knowing what people hold most sacred, what they will react most strongly to, and you find that out in the places where drama lives. My eternal hypocrisy in this area is the degree to which I exercise control over my own reactions, and the diplomacy of my responses in almost every context; sometimes I wonder who I would be if I didn't care what other people think, and then I remember that who I am is all but built around what other people think and why.
We color our worlds with who we are, and the world colors us back.

Touched By An Angel by Maya Angelou
We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

Lovecraft's Wake: Arising from the Depths to Be Your Queen
H. P. Lovecraft was obsessed with the other, the threatening, the gradually corrupting influences of knowledge. His stories were informed by his own inner darkness, splashed outward around him to create phantasms which have captured the imaginations of generations of people, and which lurk in the depths of a thousand stories waiting to rise. It is rare that a person is able to create a world so much larger than his life, one which lives on long after he expires. Lovecraft's Wake is an event celebrating the echoes of Lovecraft in the world, from the Stygian Darkness to the Eldrich Horrors of knowing too much.
I was walking in the Dreamlands of the Earth, traveling to Ulthar to visit the Scarlet Huntress who resided there, when I found the cutest baby Zoog in an Atomic Faery glen. It took some doing to enter and leave Ulthar with my adorable new Kt'tharitak - given all the cats - but once I had consulted wise Atal about things it is best you never ask about, my Zoog and I were able to return from whence we came, wiser and perhaps a little more insane. It was lucky I did wear the tidy and sturdy gown from Facade Noir that carried me through so many forests and past so many chittering Zoog. It's a Wednesday Adams inspired button down dress with a suit-inspired v-neck and wonderful pockets. I love how it manages to both be formal and just slightly goofy, and it's texture changed via a HUD which allows you to change the dress, underskirt, buttons, and lining (lapels and pockets) separately. It was the color changing aspect which really caught the Zoog's attention, and it was within one of those pockets that my darling Kt'tharitak was hidden while I consulted Atal and his many books. The rigging of this dress, like the skeletons of the Old Gods, is quite solid and well done, though in a few wider leg stances the underskirt bleeds through the coat level much like the horror of a thousand screams coming up from the depths of the waters to greet you; one of those expected things of an imperfect world. I wouldn't let it bother you.
I know eventually, in the back of some book tucked solidly below the cobbles of a road worn by the scared feet of the Voormi, the tentacles of Chaos, Panic, & Disorder will come for me, but unlike the weak of the world I don't fear the shadows which exist in the wake of the Nameless Mists. I feel them drag at me, drifting from the pearls I found under a rotten floorboard in an old farmhouse, chasing the legends of the Tsathoggua and finding only the remnants of Voormi - barely worth the trip past rain-swollen rivers. They cling to me oddly sometimes, catching the light and holding it secret within their dark depths - a full set of gems, hanging wetly against my skin and dripping now and then from my wrists. Once there was a whisper in the darkness, my candle snuffed out by the obligatory breath of wind, and my strappy heels slipped and gripped again the cobblestones, the rivets reflecting moonlight as it draped through tattered clouds; the buckles holding them in place no matter how quickly I ran. Water still drips from them, leaving ragged marks on this old wooden floor, and I can hear the croaking - I can hear the echoes, and the nails, the scrape and scrap and the breath it comes... It comes... It is coming for me...

Monday Meme: First & Recent Challenge
In true Berry style, Strawberry asks us to look back into the shadows of our birth - to the avatar we were when we hit the grid. I decided to do three comparisons; one of my 2006 avatar, who I spent ages on and then never stayed - I made the dress! One is from 2008, when I "really" started on the grid. And the last picture is, of couse, my current avatar, all shiny and new.
My first blog post was essentially a bridge between Gaia Online - which I was spending the majority of my time in at the time - and Second Life. It was almost a year after I had started in Second Life, and I had been taking pictures for only a short while beforehand. This was long before my LEA Guide, and even before my Newbie Resources - which I started as much because I wanted free stuff and was outfitting my alts as anything else! I briefly had a guide to the starting area, but that was obsolete almost as soon as I did it! So far as I know, the starting area has never reverted to the rather complicated setup it was when I took my alt Sainmhiniu through and took pictures.
Over time, this blog has swung through a lot of different things - but it's start was about images and blather, and I like to think both are the thru-line.

Gifts
I can't remember when I began buying and wearing Blue Blood clothing, but it was well before the advent of mesh, and probably even before the advent of the invisilayers which can make mesh flawless. Her work always straddles the line of cute and creepy, never quite slipping over to horrifying but often hinting darkly of the corpses in the closets you will never open, and this dress - a slip with a ragged hem splashed with something dark and red - is no exception. It's also a group gift; Ghanima has always been generous, and this dual set of dresses is an example of that - both are texture change via a HUD (it beeps very high pitched when you change colors, so you know you did!). It has a complicated pattern even before you take the blood into account - side panels and a belt which break them into "light" and "dark" (Blue Blood has a long history of White Gothic Lolita which is charming) and a bib in the contrasting shade - white on the dark patterns, and dark on the light patterns - over the long color panel which has five different options, including one which flirts with rainbow. The group costs 50$L to join, a slight cost for a total of twelve bloody dresses!
I've been looking for an outfit to add Spyralle's Genre offering this month, and couldn't resist when I saw it against my purples. This look is a combination of a large, face covering web (the lighter purple pattern with the wisps at the edges) and the forehead jewel. A HUD recolors the latter to match each of the offered colors, and also lets you change the texture of the metal base and frame for the jewel separately. I am always impressed anew by Kerryth's use of fractals in her creations, and her way of bending them around the human body, and this is a dramatic example of how fractals can be literally woven into my avatar's face. The effect is striking, and works well with further enhancements - in this case a contrasting lipstick and black eyeliner. I look forward to seeing how else Spyralle decides to play with fractals and tattoo layers; this was definitely a success, and is available at Genre until the 12th.
Sunday Squee: The Austin 100
The Sunday Squee is when I can talk about things that make me happy and
excited. The main focus will be on different things people created, from
books to movies to television shows to podcasts, and my effort will be
to highlight less commonly known things as a way to share what I love.
If you want to join in the Sunday Squee, please link back to me so I can
enjoy what you love!
This is a more time sensitive squee than my normal ones, and involves free auditory shinies! Every year, NPR creates a list of 100 songs from the South by South West concert (SXSW) and then releases it for free for the month of March, calling it The Austen 100. It's a chance to sample an incredibly variety of bands and music in any form from the app experience (nothing to download - it just plays in your browser), or the uber fancy website with all kinds of reporting on the event, to simply downloading a folder containing all of the music and clicking at random. I'm really enjoying getting a sense of what's coming out in 2015, across many genres and in many voices, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Fit for a Princess: A Red Red Rose
A Red Red Rose by Robert Burns
O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
Fit for a Princess is upon us again, with beauties raining down from above like dew! While I was taking this set of pictures, the poem by Robert Burns kept going through my head - and I simply couldn't resist a poetic flourish from a pen far sweeter than my own.
My gorgeous, ruffly, dress is a Fit for a Princess release from The Princess Shoppe; the skirt comes in eight different colors including black and brown, and the ruffles are simply to die for. They're textured on all sides, so there isn't a bad angle to take when photographing or wearing in the wild; I know it raises the cost to cover all the angles, but when trying for tricky shots, it's a blessing to not have to work around an invisible inner sleeve! The dress is also well rigged, even in the sometimes difficult shoulder and elbow areas, but it is extremely short, so remember to pack extra panties or a nice pair of tights! I love the detailing on the corset as well, complete with lacing and it's own subtle fringe, and the sleeve fall long but wide, which makes them fit perfectly around my hands with no clipping. The subtle finish of the mesh is echoed in the texture, which looks deceptively simple. The cream top has a floral shadow across it, which adds texture and interest without becoming over-wrought. The corset has a leather feel to it, with a shadowed emboss along the top edge of the bodice and perfectly placed seams. The skirt seems like it's a single color from a distance, but up close the pinstripe pattern is visible in a slightly lighter version of each color; it adds a flare to this Princess Shoppe dress that I really enjoyed.
As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
All those ruffles might make it hard for jewelry to stand out, but Cae was up to the challenge. A necklace, earring, and crown combo - like other Cae jewelry, each section including the metal is color changable via a HUD. I adore the line of the crown and the way it hugs my head; the design is so simple and yet elegant, and it's set off well by the dangling teardrops of the earrings and necklaces.I was especially appreciative of the size - large enough to hang over the ruffles of my dress and still stand out. When I showed this look to a friend, she actually thought they were a single piece and not a combination of awesome dress from The Princess Shoppe and gorgeous jewelry from Cae. I paired my whole look with a gacha win from NSP Florals. I was hoping for a deep red, but sadly those were all rares! There are enough flowers in the set that one can get a variety of flowers to match just about every outfit - including this lovely dull rose shade. I wanted something slim and simple to stand up to the rest of my blooming outfit, and this long stemmed rose definitely fit the bill.
I added a set of heels from .aisling. to my whole look - not available at Fit for a Princess, but perfect for a flowery look. I loved the ruffles of the petals along the edge of the heel, and felt like it echoed the ruffles of the blouse and skirt of my Princess Shoppe dress. The metalwork was also an attraction - lovely swooping curves like the stems and leaves of a living rose, and color changeable between five colors. I picked up a fatpack and have barely taken them off my feet since I bought them at the end of February!
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
I tucked into the petals of my .aisling. slippers another gem, a anklet from Sax Shepherd Designs which will be a free gift from 21 Shoe this month - a new promotion for their group. There will be one a month, some special additional accessory from one of the 21 Shoe creators. The group is free to join right now, but I have heard on the grapevine that might no longer be the case come April - so jump in fast and wait for the glorious accessories to fall out of the notices and into your inventory!
One final announcement for the future - this time Skin Faire instead of 21 Shoe - .:Soul:. is releasing the awesome mouth I'm wearing in these pictures at the faire. In order to sell things so that people will be added to the redelivery database and to ease gift giving, Charlie has set it up so that you can purchase a gift card for a specific item at the faire, and then redeem it on any sim which allows scripts, which unfortunately won't include the Skin Faire sims. You can also pass the gift card to another person before redeeming it, which makes gift giving a breeze! I'll follow up with a more expansive post on how it will work, but this is a little note to prep anyone whose looking at my mouth and saying, "I want some of that!"
And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!
And fare-thee-weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' 'twere ten thousand mile!

Bright Spots
In the last week, I have been on a roller-coaster of emotions. A fantastic offer from my mother was followed by my first street accident, then there was the pleasure of days off and a fun birthday weekend followed by finding out my car was totaled - and all the fear that goes with that - and then finding out my insurance would pay me enough to get another car. Today I feel as raw as a guitar string, plucked too many times and still humming tensely. My hope is a few words to the gods - of thanks, of hope, of request - will help settle me along with a good nights sleep and a few more glasses of milk.

Genre: Reversal of Fortune
I am not only decked out in a bunch of amazing Genre exclusives, but I also built a fun set in the moonlight from the same source; the Dark Arts has been fertile for pushing my style in directions it doesn't often go and this time I did a cool teal look for an icy fortune teller, in contrast to the fiery fanatic of my first look. I also went significantly sleeker and more modern, wanting a high contrast with my prior appearance.
My outfit is actually a combination of items from two stores - a mini-dress turned shirt from Vengeful Threads, and a pair of leggings from Sn@tch that match so perfectly that they seem made for each other. Both of them are textured with rich colors - a deep black with pale gray highlights, and a wonderfully rich teal that fades in and out of the blackness it is placed upon. The teal seems almost enameled, with hints of the black base beneath and some lovely light edges around the flames of the halter top. The Vengeful Threads halter top itself is quite sexy, with the teardrop cutout and low slung sides holding up a spiked waistband. I love the shift from dominant teal to dominant black, with the veves glowing magically out of the darkness of the skirt. This same effect is echoed on the leggings from Sn@tch - a black background with a pattern of inverted crosses glowing out of it. The effect is nearly a smooth one until the ankles, when the fabric buckles naturally and forms a perfect base for either the standard Second Life foot or the SLink feet I used here. The two together work wonderfully together and make a cohesive look that forms the basis for a truly impressive selection of accessories.
The first set of accessories all come from one store - Zanzibar creationZ - and work together wonderfully. Firstly the circlet with the soft sea green sliver of moon is one of a variety of crowns with a similar design but different seals on the gray metal "shadow", each representing a different demon from the Ars Goetia. All of the colors come with a different sigil and is named for the demon represented by that sigil - so take care whom you place upon your brow! They come in packs of two - for example, my Leraje circlet also comes with Amon in red. Also from ZcZ is the rings in blackened metal on my fingers - worked in the shapes of runes from Norse and Germanic cultures. Manaz, Uruz, Othilo, Dagaz, and Sowilo make up both hands, placed on various fingers with Sowilo tucked before the second knuckle. They're fit for the SLink Relaxed hand but each ring is editable independently to fit them to any hand of your choice. They are also resizable, which means that even on my unusually sized girl paw it was a matter of stretching them a little to make them fit. At the same time, I added the symbolic black and white manicure and pedicure from ZcZ, including a variety of other symbols - including the anhk one I'm using. I love them for their simplicity, and for symbols with directions there are options for coloring the nails appropriately.
ZcZ set a high bar for accessories, but luckily the rest of my accessories clear it handily! Over my eyes is an amazing mask and horns from BluPrintz with lovely dangling crystals. It's color change between several options - I'm showing bone horns with a black mask and yellow jewels, but there are tons of other options for other looks. I found the fit to be easy and there are even small bands which hook over the ears for verisimilitude. I paired it with the lipstick from Sn@tch - also featured above for leggings - a dull color with simple sheen which is a perfect match for the brighter, gleaming eyeshadows you can pick up with it. The final touch to my whole look is this amazing, color change via HUD necklace from LOULOU&CO, which comes in eye and gem styles. I chose the eye, of course, since I even seers need some way to see! It fits perfectly into the keyhole of my Vengeful Threads dress, and the petals and beads can all be shifted to different colors and patterns. It's a creepy and yet lovely accessory that I think all of the blind seers will be selecting from now on!
The backdrop I build is in the forests of Lasting City, a lovely sim designed and created by my dear friend Charlie. I shamelessly took over a grove, filling it first with the fountain and stone surround from Frogstar, which also include the curving stone frame and the hanging glow stones. I love the use of materials on this in particular - the stone looks slightly damp in the moonlight, catching the light sharply in contrast with the softer and duller ground. In the center I placed an enlarged crystal ball from Noctis - the one with the skeletal hands holding the stone in place. It also moves as you look into it - an eerie effect even in a much smaller globe. Arranged around the fountain are a set of candles in cross bases from Artisan Fantasy, seven total candle colors available. The wood is set to gleam glossily and the candles themselves give off a soft, golden glow. And finally, tucked off to the side and captured above in the shot that took in my non-Genre shoes is a wonderfully programmed Tarot Deck from Anachron which uses the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck that passed into public domain. There are a bunch of spreads available, and more astonishingly the deck is set to give a short description of the card, with additional notes if it's reversed. It's an amazing set for Tarot Readings in Second Life, and I can't recommend it enough!

I adore roses - all kinds, all colors, all varieties - and I have for most of my life. I love how it opens, thin petals blossoming out from a tight heart. I love all of the color varieties, from the color contrast of fire and ice to the purity of single color flowers. I love all the different scents, from the light and sweet yellow, to the rich and dark red. Images of climbing roses trellised all over my house fill my dreams - however unlikely that eventuality might be. In Second Life, roses are somewhat rare but beautifully made, frozen in their moments of singular loveliness.
I especially love wearing the roses and dresses made of roses - the way they can be tucked into hair or frame the curves of a bodice always leave me thrilled, and they're all but made to twine around the waist and then fall in graceful rain to the ground! I also love over-sized roses I can stand on and use to decorate - there is something amazing about being the size of a large blossom and spinning on top of it in dance. Roses are amazing in any world, but in Second Life I can be an insect drawn to their glory!
