If you love intelligent women drunkenly commenting on pretty much anything and everything, than Another Round (from Buzzfeed and regularly on Twitter) is the podcast for you!
Every week, Heben and Tracy drink the good stuff, do an interview, and fill time with a variety of entertainments. My personal favorite is Tracy's Joke Time (she told the Chet's Nuts joke for Kwanzaa!!!) as apparently we have exactly the same sense of humor, but Drunken Debates is always good for some off-the-cuff improvisation, there's always something educational to learn on Tracy's Animal Corner, Heben makes a killer quiz (I agree, Tanner Shirpinsurp is the Best! Name! Ever!), and now and then incredible things happen - like Heben and Tracy all but back-to-backing two major political coups. There's also some video floating around - most recently Heben and Tracy's Kwanzaa Spectacular!!!, but also an earlier live show in June.
It's pretty much impossible to pick a favorite Another Round Episode, so I'm going to focus on their Coup Interviews instead. Trust me when I say this is worth listening to from the beginning and keeping a few favorite episodes handy - but take these as an introduction to the Awesome that is Tracy and Heben (and the Pod Squad!).
- Four Episodes in, they already landed Gene Demby, the lead blogger at NPR’s Code Switch, as an interview.
- Episode Ten and they have achieved Grammy Award Winner Brandy Norwood as an interview.
- Only Two Episodes later, Jean Grae comes on for one of my favorite episodes of all time, and steps in as the one woman House Band for Another Round.
- Episode Thirteen then brings the awesome Roxane Gay onto the stage and she is amazing.
- (While she isn't broadly famous, Crissle West of The Read dominates my heart, and so her Episode 16 is a must for the confluence of two of my favorite things in the world.)
- At this point, almost every interview is famous so we're stepping up the criteria a little to 'It made me wriggle with joy'. Episode 19 brings us Audie Cornish, host of NPR’s All Things Considered.
- Episode 23 introduces Dave Simon, creator of Homicide, The Wire and Show Me A Hero.
- Episode 26 was another "Deo's favorite people meet" moment when Dr. Adrienne Keene from Native Appropriations came by the show.
- Episode 27 continues the "This is Awesome" trend with Ta-Nehisi Coates.
- Then Episode 28 (audio starts at link) cold-clocks all of us when Hillary Clinton stops by. I mean, Whaaaaaaaat!!!
- And then Episode 32 knocks it out of the park with Melissa Harris-Perry.
- In Episode 36, Margaret Cho is as funny and serious as ever.
- And the Heben and Tracy go to the White House to talk to Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama.
Now I want to buy a Round for Heben and Tracy. They have brought joy into my life in so many ways, ways I can't even name, and I've learned more than a few things along the way. This is for you, ladies - the best top shelf whiskey and my sincere love.
And just remember... Drink more water. Eat your vegetables. Call your mom. Take your meds. Refill your meds - don't wait until you run out of something! Back up your data. Take a walk for the sake of taking a walk. Do some stretching. Love yourself just a little bit more.
There's always time for Another Round.
