New Blogger: Style by the Throat
My dear friend Aydryan started a blog today at wordpress called Style by the Throat (isn't that a fantastic name? The person who thought of that must be very smart), so swing on by and say hi to him. He promises lots of yummy pictures, and we might even get some of him as a BOY. He makes a very hot boy, but he's been rather girly lately. Boooo!
Love ya, Ayd!
Twisted Color Challenge: Week 19 - Morning Glory
It all starts with a smile is a new-to-me sim, and I have to admit I am deeply grieved by the fact that all too often I first hear of beautiful sims in time for them to go away. This one is particularly charming, a small town surrounded by gently rolling hills topped with cherry trees in full bloom. Since cherry blooming season is so short, it's nice to be able to visit a facsimile of it in-world, to pose beneath the cherries and enjoy the gently floating petals.I also really liked the small town, with it's candy colored storefronts and pristine cobblestone steps. There aren't stores here, but there is an amazing Ice Cream Parlor with one of my favorite quotes: "You can't buy happiness, but you can buy ice cream and it's almost the same thing."
It's a very sweet sim, especially in the small details, which is what I love for my style of photography. When I am trying to photograph my shorter-than-average avatar in the world, these small details become much more important to me than they do for landscape photographers; the background, and how well made and interesting it is, is central to my pictures and what ones I take. I'm going to do my next photoshoot here as well and do some comparing of how different windlights change the mood and style of a sim; here, to match my Twisted Color Challenge shades of bright blue and pale pink for Morning Glory I went for a sweet blue and pink with clear, white light. I wanted to bring out the pastels in the world, lightly gleaming in the sweet morning light.
My hair, with it's adorable pigtails, is a new release from Wasabi Pills which is unrigged mesh, which means I was able to stretch it a little to make the pig tails only cover the ends of my ears. I really like the fan effect and curls down, which sets it apart from other pigtails I always have in my inventory. My cosmetics come from another sadly-closing place - Croire, which is having a 50% off sale for a while as the last hurrah. There is some lovely stuff there, so go check it out. Crowning my ears is a new release from Illusions, simple bands of string which is texture-change on touch as well as tintable, and are just a fun addition to my ears. It's been a while since I was rocking my massive-jewelry ears, and these are a sort of sweet throwback to them while staying more simple. My jewelry is an older release from Eclectica, her antique heart set which I simply adore. I've reshaded it to gold and pink for this look, and it along with my amazing stockings from G Field, really represent the soft and sweet pink of Morning Glory.
My dress and shoes are from a new-to-me store which I found through some of the cross-sim discount programs called Liv Glam; for a very low price, you get some really pretty dresses and shoes with HUD-based retexturing. I was particularly struck by how it was packaged - it is actually packaged in the HUD, which means that HUD serves two purposes; it both recolors the clothing and serves as a redelivery for other sizes of mesh if necessary. These are template-based dresses, but they are priced in keeping with that which makes them much more within reach of an ever-dwindling pocketbook; I ended up picking up a whole lot in a short amount of time, so you'll be seeing them here again sometime soon. Finally, my amazing pale blue nails and my Sheepie accessories are releases from Adore and Abhor, and I simply couldn't resist pairing a purse and a stuffie even though the pink of my stuffie is much brighter than Morning Glory; I simply love them together, and I thought this fit my child-like, sweet look very well. I entirely failed to get a good picture of the nails, but they are simply and clear colored and a simply gorgeous pastel without any of the graying that sometimes happens with very pastel colors.

Wrapped Up With A Bow
A long time ago, I began to notice some changes in packaging and started collecting some of the most fantastic and my favorites, meaning to pull together a few now and then for pictures. And I kept forgetting, or having something else to do, but finally I have pulled them all together and they are epic. These are just the ones with built in poses with me standing, so they're a little more repetitive than my usual shots, but I really think the inventive and glorious packaging - all of it giving you things either automatically or with a single click - speaks for itself. Above is the packaging from De La Soul, which contains the tree that is in the middle of the store along with a picture of the product. Below is an adorable corset-purse from Favole (since closed) that I seriously considered keeping just as the purse - it's well made and totally adorable, and comes with the hand-outstretched pose for easy clicking. The Frooti package was probably the funniest, including me falling backwards with fruit flying everywhere; it makes me giggle every time I see it. I also love the dollies, and the tiny packages, all carefully held out so that you can see them and click them easily. Inventive packaging is among my favorite thing in Second Life - it adds such fun and whimsy to a routine endeavor. Each of these pictures is a different store (except for one repeat).
My bow, which is nearly swallowing my head, was an awesome release from SoliDea FoliEs, a store which has joined my growing list of stores to check out when I have some time and attention. I love the big, swoopy curves. My one complaint is it is very hard to find a hair to fit under it - I once talked about making a "hood friendly" hair folder for moments like this, especially now that more and more hair is un-editable mesh. My hair is a gorgeous release from Truth that I picked up after finally cramming myself into the sim during his sale. I blew a lot of cash for that, and this is one of the awesome, curly results. I love the loose curls - they blow me away, all loose and sweet. My dress is from one of my longtime favorite stores that I haven't blogged for ages - but she is no less amazing; Blue Blood is simply the To Go to store for well made, Gothy Lolita clothing. I particularly love her huge, floofy, layered skirts with their rich and dark textures. She's making some forays into mesh now, but I return time and again to her prim clothing because they're simply fun and still very well made. Check out the adorable bows at my hips; so adorable. Finally, my shoes are from another old favorite, G Field; I've worn her bow boots many times, but these bow shoes I keep returning too because they're simply solid.

SL DisneyBound – Week Eight: Aladdin & Jasmine (Couple’s Week!)
Aladdin is a story of misrepresentation on multiple levels - between ruler and subject, employer and employee, and between lovers; the Disney version actually added to the traditional betrayals, adding in Aladdin betraying the Jinni by not freeing him. It's also a story within a story of trickery, being one of Scheherazade's One Hundred and One Thousand Nights of storytelling, used to keep her alive and to educate a murderous ruler. My Aladdin is not only a poor person passing himself off as a wealthy man, but is not even a man. Poor Deoridhe Quandry is going to be very surprised when she gets that romper off of tricky Deoridhe Starr. I've been thinking a lot about representation and mis-representation after the recent events in Cincinnati, when three kidnapping victims finally freed themselves with the help of several neighbors.
The story breaks common narratives in any number of ways, the first rescuer being not only Latino but also monolingual in Spanish (Angel Cordero), the rescuer (Charles Ramsey) getting the attention being black and explicitly citing race relations between black and white people as a reason for believing the white woman (Amanda Berry) was in severe distress and needed help, Ramsey's current reactions showing how deeply shaken he is by the fact he never suspected anything was wrong at the house next door and his history of domestic violence now being found in the rush to brand him a hero before finding his clay feet and pillorying him for them - from beginning to end it is ripe for misrepresentation and for missing the realities of the situation. I think a lot of the comfortable stories I grew up with make me less comfortable with the idea of people being mixes of good and bad actions which all make up their totality because it would be so terribly easy to enjoy all of my good actions, ignore all of my bad ones, and pretend I only see half of my own story.
I was going to add little blurbs about clothing here, but fuck it - I am too full of FEELZ. Instead, I'm thieving an idea from The Bloggess to make a list of my twenty rules for life. In honor of her, there is no 13, only 12b, and there is thieving of ideas aplenty.
1. Feel your FEELZ. No matter how strong it is or loud it is or confused it is, feel it. Even if it's mingled hysterical laughing and crying, sometimes that is the FEEL and it needs to be felt.
2. Be kind. Practice on yourself first - you want to make sure you get it right.
3. We are the trees of the world; rooted in the dirt, in darkness, in death we reach up for the heights and are fed by light. Never forget to reach for more, but also make peace with the ground you are in.
4. Don't harsh the squee.
5. You can make everything about you even if you don't like yourself very much; remember there are other people out there, and actually you can be pretty cool.
6. There are four kinds of things in the world: known knowns, unknown knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns. The last is the hardest to remember. Try hard to remember.
7. Being wrong feels exactly like being right.
8. Don't believe everything you think.
9. The histories of things is actually pretty important. If you give someone a blank slate, you may be missing a lot of important stuff.
10. We can never see our own shadows, but we can ask people who love us to let us know what they look like.
11. Sometimes we're contradictory; it's ok, everyone is.
12. It's ok to say no. It's ok to say yes.
12b. Everyone is "that asshole" to someone.
14. One of the funnest games in the world is "make a service person smile". Play it today.
15. You're only truly an adult when you feel free to embrace childlike joy.
16. People make very bad gods and make very bad heros. Everyone needs room to be a person - good and bad together. When you see the person behind the curtain, when you've identified the feet of clay, you see the truth.
17. Love imperfect people and things.
18. Love is not a thing, it is a continual practice. "I love you" can be contained in every atom of a bowl of soup.
19. In the endless battle between Pirates and Ninjas, Pirjas always win. Ninrats are kinda assholes, though.
20. By the time it shows up on the news, it's already uncool. STOP RUINING COOL THINGS, NEWS REPORTERS.

Twisted Color Challenge: Week 18 - Pine’s Dawn
How do we know we're right?
I've been thinking about that a lot today, in response to a new podcast I'm listening too, called Hardcore History. His most recent release - clocking in at over four hours - was about the Münster Rebellion, which was when a bunch of radical, communistic Anabaptist, fresh in the throes of the Reformation, took over the town of Münster and tries to create the kingdom of god on earth. A lot of their ideals seem very familiar to us today; equality for all people, sharing goods freely, voting for our own representatives in the government. Their intentions - the written ones - were good by modern standards, if somewhat terrifying by historical ones; equality is a very new concept, communistic sharing of goods is recognized but not valued by many people, and most people viewed with horror the idea of all people being equal, as each were born to a caste and the rulers should rule while the ruled should be ruled.
Münster went down in much the way other cults have gone down, like Jonestown or the Branch Davidians. Often, the roots of them are good, if fatalistic; eschatological obsession seems to be their greatest initial flaw. Peace, love, freedom, equality - all of these things are generally acknowledged to be positive, good things. Somehow, these groups form around these men, shifts come to the group and the men, and then it ends in fire and death; I feel a strong desire to understand these fatal flaws, to know why so many good intentions, so much of a desire to be right, leads to such darkness and evil. How do we know we're right? How can we recognize when we're wrong?
I'm dressed up to match the MadPea Incan hunt this time, for the Pine's Dawn twisted color challenge. The pale color comes from my skin, a favorite from De La Soul, and my hair, a fantastic new release from Exile. The skin I've already gushed about; have I mentioned my love recently? Check out the butt on it; absolutely fantastic, and with the faintest hint of dimples. The hair is lovely and floofy, over the top enough to stand up to this fantastic dress release from Rue, which is now a collaboration between my favorite Ruina and Themis Enzo, late of Favole. The gown! The colors! The fit! My desire to squee and wriggle goes on and on! There are tons of colors available, though sadly my pocketbook - recently deflated from Fantasy Faire - was only big enough for two dresses. Woe, oh woe is me. I was able to find a color match for the greens in this fantastic set of nails from Orc Inc, which has quickly become one of my favorite nail shops. I was lured there by rainbow glitter, but the sparkles have kept me loyal and poor. I matched up the twisted colors in eyeshadow, from Elymode, and lips from Adore & Abhor. They're both staples of my inventory, go to cosmetics for my more complicated looks. Finally, my toes are covered - and made - by Felicity, in a color recently released at Steals and Deals. An up close picture is here, and you can see the delicacy of the design and the variety of textures.

Fantasy Faire: Key of Hope Hunt - Part Two (MadPea)
.: Welcome, hero, to the hunt for the Key of Hope.
[I'm going to be making some notes and suggestions as I go along, all in italics and inside of brackets like this. All of the plain text is the different parts of the hunt itself - for posterity and to record the story of the Key of Hope.]
This quest takes you into the Valley of Ish'Nar in search of the key and the scroll needed to renew the seal holding the demon prince Val'baan in his prison. You will receive further instructions from the Bard Queen as to the task she has set for you. For now, be content knowing that your actions complete a journey that will, if successful, save the Fairelands from certain darkness.
.: To begin you must meet with the Bard Queen at the entrance to the Valley. She will prepare you for the dangers and traps that await you beyond the valley walls. Your goals are multiple. You will be asked to solve puzzles as well as seek out items. The tasks will not be easy, but the rewards for completion will be fitting of your labours.
.: As you travel through your adventure the Talisman will reflect your progress, resonating with the prison's holding spells as you take each step closer to the final battle. It will also provide advice and clues as you go, since this adventure is an interactive story that will supply more information to you the deeper you journey into it. Make sure to be observant of your environment, and click the HUD for information as you progress. This will help when puzzles confront you.
.: Please note, any hunt items you are asked to find do not give out prizes. You must complete all the puzzles and collect all the items as you journey forward on your quest. Once successful, you will gain your final reward. When you have restored the seal on Val'baan's prison, follow the instructions given to you in chat to find out how to collect the treasures that await.
.: For extra help ask in FFC Fantasy Faire group chat. You can also IM Elizabeth Tinsley with technical issues. For help with finding items ask in the group.
Game begins at: Valley of IshNar (20,121,21)
Key of Hope~Final Chapter HUD [wear]: There has been an unexpected development while you gathered the components for your amulet. The messenger we expected turned out to be no messenger, but the hero Kazumon and his page Albrecht. They already had protections and went ahead, but have not been heard from since. I fear for them, and would ask you a favour: since I cannot enter the valley, will you? Find their camp and aid them as best you can. If they are wounded, or worse, take up the scroll and key and seal the prison yourself. There will be challenges ahead, but I believe that you can surmount them.
First, you will have to assemble the golems who will open the passage to the Valley. I do not know why Kazumon chose to break them, but broken they are and you must repair them before you are allowed to enter.
Go well, hero, and return safely.
[Find the three items in the sim - all of them reasonably nearby - and click on them.] You found all three parts now. Hurry back to the golem statues.
[Click on the golems.] Use the passage to enter the valley.
[Click on the glowing passage.] Behold: the Valley of Ish'Nar. Where a hermit once tended his library, now there is only desolation. Move swiftly, find Kazumon and his page and do what must be done! Start the search from their camp.
[Go searching for the camp. and look around.] But wait, there is a letter...
"Dearest Elizabeth, Things are quiet here, Kazumon says they are too quiet, but I think he's getting twitchy in his old age. We have a decent camp and our blankets are dry, which is better than things have been of late. We will approach the prison tomorrow, and K says that today he will climb the tower to see if he can find the catacombs we heard of on the way here. He thinks he'll find treasure down there, I'm sure, but if it makes him happy I see no harm in it. The entrance is concealed, he says, so I think he may have to search for it.
K has taken the scroll with him, leaving the key here with me. Safer that way, he says, but I think it might be because he wants to be able to carry more on the way out!
[Find the key.] There! This is the Key of Hope, which will open Val'Baan's prison. With this key and the ritual scroll, you can seal him in once and, hopefully, for all. Kazumon, though, seems to have gone on. You should find the tower mentioned in Albrecht's letter.
[Find the Tower.] Behold Ish'Nar's secret: not magician as some claimed, but a mechanical genius, far ahead of his time. His magic was one of cogs and gears, a different knowledge, and one that would not clash with the spells that had hold Val'Baan. Consider these lights and levers, and you will find the way onward.
[Solve the Tower Puzzle - Each control is it's own individual control, so four people can work at once.] Excellent! Now, the letter also mentioned catacombs. You should find them.
[Find the catacombs - make sure to use the ladder to climb down. If you fall, you can fall under the catacombs and get stuck (if you get stuck, use the latter to crawl out and then back in again).] Alas, poor Kazumon. But the scroll seems to be safe: there lies the case before you. The combination must, I am sure, be something relevant, but perhaps Kazumon was able to leave some kind of clue in his last moments. Open the case, then, take its contents and the key and finish what he and Albrecht started.
[Look around for clues.] Blood: Another letter! These must spell the solution to the cryptex. [Enter the letters by clicking on each band until the word is spelled out.]
The scroll destroyed... but there is another. The Pirate Queen Rynn somehow came into possession of the original that Meldia and her heroes used a hundred years ago, and buried it in a secret place. The map is known to be held by Pi Rain, but they have lent it to a writer of my acquaintance. Find his workplace, steal the map and follow its trail. Von Trips (208,33,22)
Good, now to track down the scroll! I have sent a water sprite, to watch over it for you and she tells me that it is guarded by a colourful bird. Loring Park Place (41,27,31)
Here is the scroll case, but of course it's been locked. You must translate the inscription to open it. My agent has already retrieved one and is waiting for you to consult it. La Bella Luna (100,151,1004)
We have the key's location! Someone else has been searching for it, but even breaking the furniture didn't help them. Find it before them and they'll be left eating crow. Slaughterhouse (223,128,44)
[Find the key.] The box opened at last - but alas, the scroll is damaged! But we are lucky - there is enough here to give the complete text, but you must have an intact scroll from which to work. First, you will need parchment. Time to rest for a moment, take stock and consider some of the others who have been on this journey before you. The parchment will be easier to find if you do. Voodoo (163,223,26)
Now all that is required is ink of a suitable quality. My spies tell me that some is kept close by a slim gentleman whose place of rest has quite a view of the bay. FATEisland (154,51,34)
And now, we make the scroll. Go to the island of Ode, then through the woods; on the cliffs looking south, you will find the house of scribe Lorin. Use what you have there to make your new scroll. Ode (174,196,76)
Now to finish the preparations with enchanted oil. The Dwarfins, ever friends, tell me that a suitable vial is held safely here, "Ever-lit," they say, "even when the moon shines upon it." Dwarfins (38,119,23)
[Find the vial - a walk form the landing point.] It is done! The scroll is complete. With this and the key, you can reach Val'Baan's prison and seal the breach. Return to the Valley, make your way to the temple by the waterfall and prepare to face the Demon Prince himself... Valley of IshNar (72,123,21)
[Go to the gate flanked by two sculptures holding books.] Ah, Ish'Nar; he did like his puzzles, didn't he? If you are to pass this way and reach the temple, you should consider the statues: are they as alike as they first appear?
[Find the four differences between the two of them to get through. If other people are trying at the same time, you may interrupt each other, so take it in turns.] Success! Press on, now, up the steps, through the old library and on towards the Temple.
[Find the entrance to the temple.] Beyond this point lies the way to Val'Baan's prison. The combination is already with you - enter it and pass through.
[Solve the combination.] This temple is the outer chamber of Val'Baan's prison; counterpart to his cell in the otherworld, sealed five ways to prevent his escape. Yet there, the crack through which he will come if he is not stopped. A century ago these seals were placed, and now you must place them alone, His escape route is your entrance; steel yourself and step through.
[Click on the crack.] You have reached Val'baans cell at last. Where five once stood to align the seals and complete the ritual you must do it alone - hurry! With the scroll upon the altar, trace the pattern, make darkness into light and stop the demon prince from escaping!
[Click the scroll. One person needs to do this at a time or you can interrupt each other.] This scroll contains the combination you need for the seals. Quick! Don't let the Demon Prince escape!
[The hardest part is, once you figure out the direction, clicking on the proper runestones. Keep in mind each has a halo around it, which means if you're clocking some in the back, you can hit the front in error. I ended up de-rendering most of the surrounding building to get an angle which could encompass everything without the light over-lapping.]
And so the Fairelands are safe, and with them the world. You have stood against evil and darkness and death, and carried a torch of hope that will light the way for all who come after you. It is hope that carries us forward, and each one of us sleeps a little easier because that hope is fostered by the knowledge that people fight for us, to keep us safe, to heal and to defeat the evils that can strike at any one of us. You are our hope, and we all thank you.
It is fitting, then, that you are rewarded. Go to the great wall, and claim your prizes from the great chest.
[Click on the giant chest] And thus are you rewarded. Go in safety with our thanks, hero. Perhaps, if trouble rises again, we shall call on you once more. Farewell.

Farewell.

Monday Meme: Second Life Haiku
Strawberry has something new for us today - a Second Life Haiku Challenge which encourages us not only to be creative, but also to try to sum up an entire Second Life in a few syllables. This is a very difficult task; what I do varies so widely, so completely, and is so divorced from the nature around me, that it's difficult to meld Second Life with Haiku, which I think of as very natural, nature-driven poetry. Traditional Haiku was seasonal, and also always included some sort of punctuation. Matsuo Bashō, is one of the most highly regarded poets, from a time when haiku was a competitive sport of wit and style, more similar to modern rap or spoken word than how poetry is treated in classes as something read and contemplated over time. Here are a few of my favorites of his:
A caterpillar,
this deep in fall--
still not a butterfly.
this deep in fall--
still not a butterfly.
A bee
staggers out
of the peony.
staggers out
of the peony.
A cicada shell;
it sang itself
utterly away.
it sang itself
utterly away.
A field of cotton--
as if the moon
had flowered.
as if the moon
had flowered.
In Haiku, it's the unspoken context which gives as much to the meaning as anything else - the caterpillar's loss of transformation, the drunken bee, even the cicada which vanished exist beyond the poem and live in my imagination like a song. There is no way I will even approach his skill, I have neither the practice nor the talent, but I'll give it a try.
I explore and change
and make with the pretty view --
Profane and profound.

SL DisneyBound – Week Seven: Kuzco
Week seven of my quick, quick, catch up Disneybound challenge is Kuzco, the "Incan" emperor from The Emperors New Groove. He spends a lot of time as a llama, but I decided for something a lot less hairy for this look, drawing inspiration from French and Japanese cultural fashions for something imperial, and ended up with less a casual look and more a really striking, High Fashion look that would get me stared at on the street. I ended up really loving it, though - it's so impressive and over the top. I found this amazing sim named Luminarios Divide to take pictures in, which had a dreamy, haunted Japanese-style garden. One thing I think about with strongly culturally significant items, like the head-dress which is appropriate for a Japanese Oiran, is cultural appropriation - the taking, redefining, and in some cases gross lack of understanding about aspects of other cultures.
Oiran are rooted in the Edo period (1600–1868), the word becoming a general term for courtesan in the mid-1700s. They were restricted to walled districts by the Tokugawa Shogunate and only allowed out to visit dying relatives and for cherry blossom viewing. Japanese women also ended up being kidnapped or bought by Portuguese traders and their crews; the impression that Japan is more sexual, and the racists stereotypes of Japanese (and Asian) women as submissive and obedient likely has it's roots here. How much do I, a non-Japanese woman, play into these stereotypes when I wear artifacts of a foreign culture? It's difficult to say, and so while I am drawn to these symbols of complicated cultures and rarefied society, I also try to keep in mind the historical and modern implications inherent in them.
This gorgeous hair, complete with the enormous combs which indicate a wealthy Oiran, is from Tukinowaguma - an amazing hair store with a wide variety of well made, unique hairstyles. Whenever I want something that blows me away. When I saw Kuzco's hair, I knew right away I would have to go to Tukinowaguma in order to hope to match the glory of his sunburst-style crown. I added a chain bindi, a new release from Souzou Eien and a perfect fit for my brow; I love how simple and spare it is against the opulence of the rest of my look. My eyeshadow is a slightly naturalistic shadow from Elymode, in shades of red and gold to match the overall color theme, and I paired dark red lips from Heartsick wish a single stripe from La Petite Morte to loosely echo the distinctive red lower lip of the Oiran. Heartsick is currently having a sale to try to raise money for the creator to get a new computer - hers died a horrific death. Finally, the distinctive bright turquoise earrings he wears are more demurely represented by a pair of ring earrings from Earthstones.
My collar is from Rosal, and is my favorite of her many different corset styles - the Unmei - which is loosely based on the Obi, brocade fabric, and silky ties. She recently released gloves and ballet style boots to match, each with the distinctive band of brocade and stylish bow. I paired it with this simply amazing gown from Violent Seduction, based on the styles of 17th Century court gowns in France, with it's low-cute, square-necked top and the heavy, velvet overskirt and corset. My only wish from this outfit is that I could wear the corset part separately; I would love to pair it with a variety of tops and bottoms to enjoy it across the grid. The skirt is rigged to the legs, which means sometimes it's movement is a little odd, but overall it means that it remains puffed out no matter where one goes or how one moves. Finally, my boots are from G Field and come in two parts, so I was able to get the gold and black style of Kuzco's sandals. The top part are actually originally white, but since all of her shoes are modify-ok I was able to tint them to match the gold of the rest of my look.

Twisted Color Challenge: Week 17 - Coastal Night’s
Slowly I'm catching up on all of my challenges - now is time for the twisted color challenge, and I really love the high contrast of the color combination, a dark, dull blue and a soft, pale pink called Coastal Nights. I ended up combining a gown and a corset - the prim of the Fellini Couture gown allowing me to clear out it's torso area so I can go all narrow and slinky. This is actually the second time I've worn the Perception corset for a challenge - the last time for Snow White - and it's really the perfect color once again. The flowers along the gown and covering the skirt are beautifully rendered, and manage to break up the line of the corset to make it a little less severe, and help it to look like a unified outfit instead of two disparate pieces. Where I really started, though, was with this Cloche hat from Eclectica, only recently released. I had the pink hat, and I was able to "select face" in the edit menu to tint only the hat, not the band, this rich, dark blue. It really perfectly encompasses Coastal Nights, I think - delicate and dark all at once.
It has been a very long week, and I'm definitely feeling the strain of a lot of things pulling me in a lot of directions. I've also been dwelling on some new information about the philosophy of ethics from Ex Urbe - see, I've never taken any formal philosophy courses except for the odd existential course; I've read a few philosophers, but it's always been in my own type and style. It was fascinating, then, to read about there being three types of ethical/moral types, separated by the origin of the ethical validity. The oldest is called Virtue ethics, but it's best described as Intent Ethics - e.g. the ethical validity comes from the intention of the person taking an action. The second is Deontology, which is a weird word, and might better be called Rules Ethics - e.g. there is a Code of Conduct and one is ethical/moral so long as one obeys the Code. The third came from one of my favorite people, Machiavelli, and is called Utilitarianism or Consequentialism, and is the most accurately named for modern language - the ethical validity comes from the results of the actions. I've been having as great deal of fun breaking down my own moral structures by which of the types of ethics each falls under - I'm a pretty even mix of Intent and Consequence, with a little Deontology thrown in for the odder axioms which underpin my moral sense (like the values of beauty and harmony). A lot of discussions I've gotten into in the past seem to gain some clarity from these lenses, too - often in issues of morality, people are arguing between different types of morality, and thus at cross purposes. Fascinating stuff, isn't it?

SL DisneyBound – Week Six: Merida
I am very behind on my challenges, so now it's time to catch up - a week or two behind but it should go pretty quickly. The Fantasy Faire often derails my other events; the dress of blogging at least four stores (all I managed this year) and all of the sims (with this post I've taken pictures in them all), my cup usually runneth over. This Disneybound Challenge is Merida, from the movie Brave, a spunky redhead with a bow. Luckily, during the Sagittarius Zodiac event I had picked up the Hopscotch pose sets for The Huntress, so I was all prepared with bow and pose to take over the woods. This is an amazing set of poses, very naturalistic and dynamic, with the bow - and when necessary arrow - included. The Fairelands Junction is a wooded, flowery sim with teleports to all of the other sims hidden in woods, where the silent auction was. There's a lovely lake lined with candles set in stone, fields of wildflowers of every shade and hue, and untamed forests with a bare track running through them made by the feet of a thousand visitors.
Merida's look seemed to be created of two features in equal parts - bright red hair, and a bright green gown. The goal is to not reproduce, but to make a more modern look or re-interpretation, and I remembered this fantastic gown from r2 Fashion I picked up ages ago and kept meaning to photograph. The color was vibrant and unmistakable, and was perfectly matched in these slightly velvety boots, also from r2 Fashion. I wanted the effect of bracers from a more modern point of view, though, and luckily for me Rosal had just released gloves to match her Unmei set, which I had fallen in love with months ago. It has the gorgeous feature of long strips of brocade, which I tinted dark red to match the inside of my dress and the bottoms of my boots, coloring the rest the same vibrant green as the rest of my look - with a few black and white embellishments as appropriate. Finally, for the signature red curly hair, there was no store better than Analog Dog, who does - in my opinion - the best curly hair on Second Life. I cycled through a few different shades before settling on this one, a little darker than the images of Merida that I saw, but in the same vein as the reds on my clothing. It's a very simple look, but I think more than meets the challenge.
