Monday Meme: Strike a Pose Challenge

Maybe I Can Rise Above

The theme of the week is poses, and in that vein Strawberry asks us to do a pose challenge - where we talk about our favorite pose stores for a while. I actually keep my poses organized alphabetically in a HUD, so I'll be sharing my top movers and shakers in that order. I rarely use rezzing poses because I'm usually taking pictures in the field, so I'm going to focus on my most used and why I use them, focusing on stores which are still open. Like many people, my gateway store was Long Awkward Pose, and I have an extensive collecton of poses from her that I still use to this day, however I've branched out into a wide variety of pose stores, and keep collecting more all of the time.

Unlike many photographers, I do short "photoshoots" where I use a single pose store several times in a row in the same location. A lot of the structure of it is due to ease of recording exactly what I'm doing - jump location, windlight, and pose brand enough and you just get confused - but it's led to me categorizing a lot of stores by their general feel, and then selecting based on the mood I want to have for my images. I'll be discussing these impressions here, but keep in mind they're just one person's opinion - I highly recommend you check out the poses yourself to see hat you like best.

Call Me, Maybe?

Adorkable Poses: Currently available on the marketplace; she closed her in world store a short while ago. What I love about Adorkable is how sweet, natural, and enthusiastic her poses are - they really aim to be cute and bouncy without the stiff, posed style of a more modelesque pose store. I also like the flowing nature - the head movements are interesting and the arms and legs are interesting. When I'm doing a cute, bouncy, "all around the sim" photo set, Adorkable is where I begin. ( All Adorkable Poses used here. )

Three Seasons

!bang: With a wide selection of stands, one of my go to natural pose stores is !bang. I came to the store late, so it took a little while to build up my reserve, but now I have an astonishing range of poses to suit most occasions. I tend to think of !bang as my casual store - when I want something that seems breezy and effortless, I start here. Note in particular the delicate yet realistic placing of the feet above. ( All !bang poses used here. )

Rawr Giggle

Don't Freak Out: I honestly don't remember where I ran across this store, but I know it was love at first demo. This store is one of the newcomers to my stable of choices, but they have quickly become a go to store when I want something moody and sly. Many of the poses have a playful vibe to them, and I love the attitude they have. ( All Don't Freak Out poses used here. )

Any One You Can Walk Away From...

Elephante: She is a bit of a dark horse and one I don't see as often, but I really like how dynamic and interesting her poses are. There are a lot of leaps, and arm reaches, and in general a sense of movement. I started picking up Elephante poses when they were largely prop-driven, but I've been really glad to see her show up more in just stand alone poses, and I hope she keeps expanding and creating her energetic poses. ( All Elephante poses used here. )

Bright Eyes

Exposeur: Is another dynamic pose creator, but what I adore the most is how well made her poses are, especially in the area of head-clipping. I have unusually long arms and a wide head for a Second Life Avatar, so I've resigned myself to a certain about of hand-in-face actions, but as you can see from the sheer amount of "hand next to face" poses in my images with Exposeur poses, not only do my hands not clip my head, but they also don't clip my hair. ( All Exposeur poses used here. )

Baggage

Flowey: I found Flowey through Whiskey Monday's exclusive use of her, and what I like most about her poses are their expressiveness. Flowey poses are evocative of a wide variety of emotional states, from sadness to anger to grief to happiness, and that makes them compelling and fun to use for photoshoots. ( All Flowey poses used here. )

Slow Dance

Glitterati: Closed in world, Glitterati also maintains a presence on the Marketplace, and was my go-to pose store from early on. I'll be entirely honest here and say a big part of it was her group sales; they meant that I could expand my collection of available poses without spending hundreds of thousands of Linden. Her poses are also wonderful, elegant, slightly modelesque without being stiff poses, and she would make categories of poses for specific purposes, like showing off jewelry, or to be worn with a wide skirt, which made difficult to pose outfits and images easier. I still return to her regularly, particularly when I have something refined to show off. ( All Glitterati poses used here. )

Dodging Apples

Grafica: Is a much smaller store than the ones I regularly use, but the poses are of such high quality and so dynamic and expressive that I simply can't resist. Grafica is particularly good at shoulders - SL Avatar shoulders and elbows are fraught things, but Grafica manages to bend them in awkward, unusual ways with panache. There is also a lot of leaping, leaning, falling, and floating, and all of it is awesome and fun. ( All Grafica poses used here. )

Warning, Don't Cross

Hopscotch: I used Hopscotch early on in my blogging career, left it for a while to focus on other stores, and then was bitchslapped by awesome when I ran into her again. For a long time I had thought of her as largely a prop and rez pose store, but her stand alones have become completely off the hook and fun, and cover some rare areas of interest like stretching before a run. ( All Hopscotch poses used here. )

Me in My Shadow

Olive Juice: She has only a tiny satellite store open now, but Olive Juice has long been a favorite for quirky and silly poses, and I still use them regularly when my mood is on the giggly and silly side. Her poses always seem slightly off kilter, and I particularly like the tripping and falling ones. ( All Olive Juice poses used here. )

Broken Doll

I hope you enjoyed this short, pictoral travel through my pose collections. In a very real way, poses add the dynamic element of pictures of people, and I couldn't do what I do without them.

Sunshine Girl

Ponds

It's almost summer, so it's time to break out the bright colors and find a pretty sim for some pictures. I started at Whiskey Monday's new landscape show at the Kelly Yap Art Gallery, which is lovely even if it does make me ache with envy - her landscapes are amazing and I want to take pictures with them. After yearning there, I followed the thread to her art gallery at Edloe, under the Listening Room, and the under is important, because after I spent a while spending time in her props pretending I was awesome, I found my way out and across a bridge to Catgirl's Harbour, which was absolutely gorgeous. I found bridges, cute little ponds, lovely living electronics, and a small nest of meeroos, all in a small section of sim with a beautiful coastline and in view of Edloe. I was already dressed to the nines, so an impromptu photoshoot was simply called for. I'm mostly wearing things I picked up at Collobor88, though I have mixed feelings about attending after learning that bloggers and users associated with the Liaison Collaboration were banned from the sim (some info here). It's always hard to know how to react when people do things you're not sure you agree too - but since at least one of the banned women specifically said she still blogs the event, and because so much of the details are unknown, I ended up deciding to swing by and see many of my favorite creators at work.

I'm So Hawt I'm Kewl

D!va has been my favorite store for loose, flyaway hair for a long while, and I love the flirty updo released, the back held up by color-changing hairclips. This is a prim hairstyle, which meant I was able to move a couple of bits of hair which cut through my ears - just admire that fit. The wisps and flares are just really fun, like I put up my hair in a rush and ran out the door to worship the sun. I added on these amazing sunglasses from Contraption which are just so fun, and which inspired me to use teal heels from Felicity to match the blue in these awesome glasses - like sunlight captured in ice. My lips are layered Mock lip gloss for a soft, bright, summery orange - best glosses on the grid, I swear. My jewelry is a color changing set from Maxi Gossamer, which is so becoming my jewelry of choice - give me options, people! The kind of cool thing about it is that while the names for each color type is a single color (in this case yellow), it's actually a spectrum of colors around yellow so that it looks like a funky, pulled together set instead of strings and strings of all the same beads. Really, it's a ton of fun - make rainbow next, please! My dress is from Schadenfreude, and I am SO GLAD she is making mesh. It's an adorable, strapless gown, like so many adorable strapless gowns, but the hem is simply divine - look at that lace - and the pattern is fantastic. Also, she has earned my eternal love by actually having the dress filled in across the bottom so that it looks like layers and layers of crinolines are holding the dress out. Amazing, simply amazing! My poses, by the way, are from Adorkable Poses and they are simply dreamy. Sadly, Adorkable is closing her store; luckily, she's putting things on sale so go, go, go! Finally, to return to my other touch of teal, these amazing heels from Felicity are part of her latest release and are really fun; the color was simply perfect for my look - like an icy drink on a hot summer day.

How NOT to Scam in Second Life

Ornaments

I get hit on more often than I get attempted-scammed, and I don't get hit on often, so this gem on Christmas Day blew me out of the water. I've renamed our contestant today Idiot Scammer, but her user name actually did begin with an H (this becomes important later).

[16:38] [Idiot Scammer]: Hey Deo  Really Sorry To ask this but , Can i just lend you 200 l$ please ? Promise i'll give you this Back Very very soon , It's really not in my habits to ask for money  =S
[16:39] Deoridhe Quandry: Who are you, exactly?

At this point I open up my area scanner and find she's about 53 meters away from me in a fashion sim. She's over four years old, so she should know better. The name is not at all familiar.

[16:40] [Idiot Scammer]: I play the IA RP , We met There

Side note - I've been very reclusive in the rp, so I can count the people I've rped with on one hand and I'd remember most of their names - the rest would be familiar through my watching the group chat. This name was not at all familiar, and the Display Name was full of those weird characters that I'm inclined to remember. I then checked her profile, and she's not in any of the roleplaying groups. Also, we don't call it IA RP; the phrasing is definitely off and my scammer senses are tingling.

[16:40] [Idiot Scammer]: Sorry to ask
[16:40] [Idiot Scammer]: Really
[16:41] Deoridhe Quandry: That's odd. You seem to not be in any of the groups. Odd behavior for a roleplayer.
[16:42] [Idiot Scammer]: I hide those groups cause i'm a Fashion Blogger Too , I don't want people to judge me with this

She is, in fact, a fashion blogger - one of the tiny eyes & big frowny mouth set with the characteristic t-rex arms. I won't link, but suffice it to say I would have remembered the look even with as careless as I can be with paying attention to my surroundings. I'd snark on the blog, but since you can't see it that's kind of unfair.

[16:42] Deoridhe Quandry: Though that pause DID give you time to check my profile and come up with a more plausible lie to cover the fact you are 53 meters from me.
[16:42] Deoridhe Quandry: Right. What's my character in IA, since you remember me and I don't remember you?
[16:43] [Idiot Scammer]: You're mean !
[16:43] Deoridhe Quandry: You're lying.
[16:44] Deoridhe Quandry: That's a bit MORE mean.
[16:44] Deoridhe Quandry: Especially since you're trying to swindle me out of money by pretending I know you.
[16:44] [Idiot Scammer]: Anyways
[16:44] [Idiot Scammer]: I'm just Lending , You can add me in your contacts
[16:44] [Idiot Scammer]: Wasn't lying about that
[16:45] Deoridhe Quandry: Right. Shoo. Go try to swindle someone else.
[16:45] [Idiot Scammer]: =/

Since she insisted she wasn't lying, I went to check the group for the roleplay she supposedly knew me through - even if you have hidden your group in  your profile, you still show up there. I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, even when their story sounds as rotten as month-old moose meat. Shockingly, she wasn't in the group.

[16:47] Deoridhe Quandry: Wow, FOUR H names in Amras Roleplay and none of them are you!

Oddly, she didn't have anything to say after that. Wonder why.

Fragile

A few notes about the outfit, because several of the items deserve note. The katat0nik top and skirt are actually separate pieces and include a game card for the new Ozimal's Stamp Collection event. What event you ask me? The Pufflings Present Pursuit, says I. At 100$L and under each, they are a steal to get yourself some stamp cards. Also, don't be worried if your stamp card isn't full; once you've hit the last store, you are set. The skin is a special holiday makeup from De La Soul, available for only 99$L at her store for the holidays! The shoes are a delightful new design from Grim Bros, and the red set were actually in her midnight mania recently and may return soon again. The most awesome thing about them, though, is that the butterflies actually move!! It's like a little bit of Harumagari on my feet! Also, the poses were all Advent gifts from aDORKable poses; she still has a couple of hunts on, even if the Advent season is over, so go! Go! Go!
